أبيrefused فضلهٌhis generosity أنto أغتديI begin the day غيرَnot شاكرٍgrateful
لأنعُمهِfor his favors أوor يغتديhe begins the day غيرَnot مُنعِمِbestowing favors
His generosity will not let me begin the day ungrateful
For his favors, or let him begin it without bestowing them.

يَنَالُhe receives بهاthrough it عَفواًunsolicited ولمand did not يتكَلَّمِspeak
And nothing enslaves a noble free man like a favor
That he receives unasked, without uttering a word.

I shall praise him, even if my words fall short,
For the tongue of circumstance is not mute.

And if gratitude could amplify a grateful person's voice,
I would make those between al-Hatim and Zamzam hear me.

When told, 'Here is a gain available to you,'
I refuse and say, 'Dignity is the greatest gain.'
