So if he has indeed ceased to love, and been turned away from me
by suckling at the cup, or by a cherished gazelle,
تُسَلِّطُهgrant him mastery النفوسُsouls علىover هَواهاtheir passions
وتُعطِيهand give him أزمَّتَهاtheir reins القلوبُhearts
whom souls grant mastery over their passions,
and to whom hearts surrender their reins,
بأعطافٍwith curving flanks تُباحُare permitted لهاfor their sake المعاصيtransgressions
وألحاظٍand glances تَحِلُّbecome lawful لهاfor their sake الذُّنوبُsins
with curving flanks for whose sake transgressions are permitted,
and glances for whose sake sins become lawful,
فليthen I have كَبِدٌa liver بهfor him حَرَّىburning وقَلبٌand a heart

then I have a liver burning for him, and a heart
enraptured despite the anguish within it.
