ولماand when تداعَتcalled one another للغروبto set شُمُوسُهُمtheir suns
وَقُمنَاand we rose لتَوديعِto bid farewell to الفريقِthe company الُمغَربِwestward-bound
And when their suns called one another to set,
And we rose to bid the westward-bound company farewell,
تلقَّينَthey greeted أطرافَthe edges السُّجُوفِthe curtains بمشرقٍwith a sunrise
لُهنَّbelonging to them وأَعطافَand the sides الخدورthe curtained chambers بمغربِwith a sunset
They greeted the curtain-edges with a sunrise
Of their own, and the sides of the curtained chambers with a sunset.
فماso not سرنَthey traveled إلاexcept بينamid دَمعٍtears مُصَبَّغٍstained
ولاnor قُمنَthey stood إلاexcept فوقupon قَلبa heart معذَّبtormented
So they traveled only amid stained tears,
Nor did they stand except upon a tormented heart.
كأنas though فؤاديmy heart قرنُadversary قابوسَQabus رَاعَهُterrified him
تَلاعُبُهُhis toying بالفَيلَقِwith the army الُمتأَشِبdensely massed
It was as though my heart were Qabus’s adversary, terrified
By his toying with the densely massed army.
