وما سلب الشمسَ الكسوفُ ضياءَها

ولِكنَّها سُدَّت عليها المطالعُ
The eclipse has not robbed the sun of its radiance;
And the eclipse did not rob the sun of its radiance,
rather, the horizons of its rising have been barred against it.
But the places of its rising were barred to it.

وضُرٍّ تُرَى في حافَّتَيه المنافعُ
How many a hardship has proved the path to joy,
And many a distress has been a means to joy,
and many an affliction is seen with benefits on either side.
And many an affliction at whose two edges benefits are seen.

No one whose aspirations have soared is to be blamed
And one whose cares have mounted is not to blame
if crushing blows have cast him down into the depths.
When calamities have cast him down into the depths.
