يَقُمwould arise ليfor me علىconcerning ماwhat فيin النُّفوسِthe souls دَليلُa sign
And whenever I sharpened my mind with your words,
a sign of what lies within souls would arise for me.
وأحسنand the finest ماwhat قالsaid امرؤa person فيكabout you دعوةa prayer
تلاقَتcame together عليهاupon it نيةٌintention وقَبُولُand acceptance
And the finest thing anyone has said of you is a prayer
in which intention and acceptance have met,
وشكرand gratitude كأنas though الشَّمسthe sun تُعنيis concerned بِنشرِهِwith spreading it
ففيfor in كلِّevery أرضٍland مُخبِرٌa bearer of news ورسولُand a messenger
and gratitude, as though the sun were intent on spreading it;
for in every land there is a bearer of news and a messenger.
يبثَّانِthe two spread عَرفَfragrance العُرفِkindness حتىuntil كأنماas though

Both spread the fragrance of kindness, until it is as though
wine were gleaming on a day of the north wind.
وكمand how many لكof yours نُعمىa favor لوif تصدَّىundertook لشُكرِهاto give thanks for it
لسانٌa tongue مُعدٌّwell prepared لاعتراهُwould overtake it نُكُولfaltering
And how many favors you bestow! Were thanks for them attempted
by a well-prepared tongue, faltering would overtake it.
أكلَّفُI charge نفسيmyself أنto أقابلَI match عَفوَهاits freely given bounty
بجهديِwith my effort وَهَلand can يُجزيِrepay الكثيرَmuch قلِيلُlittle
I charge myself to match their freely given bounty
with my effort—yet can little repay much?
فإنfor if أناI لمdo not اصدعI proclaim بِشُكرِكwith thanks to you إنَّنِيindeed I
وحَاشايand far be it from me منfrom خُلقِthe nature of البخيلِthe miser بخيلُa miser
For if I do not proclaim my thanks to you, then I—
and far be a miser's nature from me—am a miser.
