فأمَّاbut as for اصطباريmy steadfast endurance فهوthen it is مُمَتنِعٌunassailable وعرُrugged
Misfortunes and time assail my lifeblood;
but my steadfast endurance is unassailable and rugged.
كأنيas though I أُلاقِيI face كلَّevery يومٍday يَنُوبُنيbefalls me
بذنبٍfor a crime وماand not ذَنبيmy crime سوىexcept أَنَّنيthat I am حُرُّfree
As though what I face each day befalls me
for a crime—yet my only crime is that I am free.
فإنso if لمnot يكنbe عندwith الزَّمانِtime سوىexcept الذيthat which
أضيقُI am distressed بهby it ذَرعاًcapacity to bear فعنديthen I have لهfor it الصبرُpatience
So if time has nothing in store but what
I struggle to bear, I have patience for it.
وقالواand they said تَوّصَّلmake your way بالخضوعِthrough submission إلىto الغِنىwealth
وماand not علمُواthey knew أنَّthat الخُضوعَsubmission هوitself is الفَقرُpoverty
And they said, 'Attain wealth through submission,'
yet they did not know that submission itself is poverty.
وبَينيand between me وبينand between المالِwealth بابانِtwo gates حَرَّماboth have denied
عليَّto me الغِنَىwealth نفسيmy soul الأبيةُunyielding والدهرُand time
Between me and wealth stand two gates that have denied
me riches: my unyielding soul and time.
إذاwhen قالsaid هذاthis اليُسرُease أَبصَرتُI saw دونهbefore it
مواقفَstanding places خَيرٌbetter منthan وقوفيmy standing بهاin them العُسرُhardship
When it says, 'This is ease,' I see before it
places where hardship is better than my standing there.
إذاwhen قُدِّمواthey are given precedence بالوفرِthrough wealth أَقدَمتُI advance قَبلهمbefore them
بنفسِwith the soul of فقيرٍa poor man كلُّall أخلاِقهِhis virtues وَفرُwealth
When they are given precedence for wealth, I step ahead of them
with the soul of a poor man whose every virtue is wealth.
وماذاand what علىagainst مثليone like me إذاif خَضَعَتbowed لهto him
مطامعهُhis desires فيin كفِّthe palm of مَنone who حصَلَacquired التِّبرُunminted gold
And what harm to one like me, if he has mastered
his desires, held in the palm of one who has acquired gold?
وأكثرand the most ماthat which عنديI have لمنfor one who قعدتfell short بهfor him
فضائلهُhis merits الإعراضturning away والنَّظرُand the gaze الشزرُscornfully sidelong
And the most I offer one who falls short
in merit is disregard and a scornful sidelong glance.
