أَلا أَبلِغ بَني عَمرٍو رَسولاً

أَلا أَبلِغ بَني عَمرٍو رَسولاً

فَإِنّي في مَوَدَّتِكُم نَفيسُ

فَإِنّي في مَوَدَّتِكُم نَفيسُ

Hear this: convey a message to the sons of ʿAmr.

Shall I not send a messenger to the clan of 'Amr

For I am of great worth as your friend.

For I cherish your friendship and hold it dear

فَما أَنا بِالضَعيفِ فَتَظلِموني

فَما أَنا بِالضَعيفِ فَتَظلِموني

وَلا جافي اللِقاء وَلا خَسيسُ

وَلا جافي اللِقاء وَلا خَسيسُ

For I am not weak, that you should wrong me,

I'm no weakling to be wronged by you

Nor harsh in greeting, nor base.

Nor aloof from you all, or mean and drear

وَلَكِنّي ضَبارِمَةٌ جَموحٌ

وَلَكِنّي ضَبارِمَةٌ جَموحٌ

عَلى الأَقرانِ مُجتَرِئٍ خَبوسُ

عَلى الأَقرانِ مُجتَرِئٍ خَبوسُ

But I am a mighty, untamable lion,

But I am fierce and daring 'gainst my peers

Bold against rivals, a seizer of prey.

Assailing the valiant, though discreet and leery

أَفي حَقِّ مُواساتي أَخاكُم

أَفي حَقِّ مُواساتي أَخاكُم

بِمالي ثُمَّ يَظلِمُني السَريسُ

بِمالي ثُمَّ يَظلِمُني السَريسُ

Is it just that I aid your brother

Is this how you repay your brother's cares?

With my wealth, and then the impotent man wrongs me?

By taking my wealth as the nights grow bleary
