Tell Tayy, all together and scattered,

And Saʿd has a share in what I say.

They are brothers; their father is our father,

Not merely by claim; and calamities come in turn.

The swords of Azd of Oman have slain us

In folly—and the ages hold strange things:

    Blood left unavenged, deserted by

His nearest kin, save the owl and the hard earth.

O son of Salma—and Salma belongs to the confidante [phrase unclear]—

Indeed, nobleman after nobleman may be miserly.

Would that I had died when I called to you, as you called—

To Tamim, with no kinsman answering.

Would that I knew about you, son of Umm ʿUmays!

Indeed, my heart is uneasy over what you witnessed.

I was absent from him, while you were not

Absent; and the Sovereign is a Lord who takes account.

    قَد غَمَرنا وَعِزُّنا مَرهوبُ

    They dared against us what others feared to attempt;

We have been overwhelmed, though our might is feared.
