بَصيرٌkeen-sighted بِالدُجىin the darkness هادٍsure of the way هَموسُsoft-footed
So they marched by night, while he too travelled,
Keen-sighted in darkness, sure of his way, soft-footed.

At the bend of al-Qaryatayn he had dependants:
His cubs and a full-uddered, middle-aged, fierce-biting lioness.

They were fed on every dust-fallen, despoiled victim
Brought in, its worn coat shedding hair [reading uncertain].

He saw travellers and a baggage-train on the plain
In late afternoon; the dense thicket was his cover.
تَواصواthey counselled one another بِالسُرىto travel by night هَجراًat midday وَقالواand they said
إِذاif ماemphatic particle اِبتَزَّseized أَمرَكُمyour command النَعوسُthe drowsy one
At midday they counselled one another to travel by night, and said:
“If a drowsy man seizes command of you,
فَإِيّاكُمthen beware وَهَذاand this العِرقُthe sand-ridge وَاِسمواand make for

Then beware this sand-ridge, and head
For a wasteland whose approaches are smooth.

وَضُمّواand gather together كُلَّevery ذيone with قَرنٍa coupling-rope وَكيسواand be prudent
Fasten the saddles firmly on the mounts,
And keep every tethered beast together; be prudent.”

قَريباًnearby ماnot يُحَسُّis perceived لَهُfrom him حَسيسُa faint sound
Until they halted for sleep; he stayed out of their sight,
Nearby, with no sound of him to be heard.
خَلاexcept أَنَّthat العِتاقَthe noble-bred مِنَamong المَطاياthe mounts

Except that the noble-bred among the mounts
Sensed him, and looked askance toward him.

Then, when he saw that they had drawn together,
He came swaggering into the midst of their camp.
فَثارَso sprang up الزاَجِرونَthose shouting him off فَزادَthen he increased مِنهُمtoward them
تَقرّاباًin nearness وَواجَهَهُand confronted him ضَبيسُa fierce man
The shouters sprang up, but he came toward them
Still closer, and a fierce man confronted him
بِنَصلِwith the blade of السَيفِthe sword لَيسَthere was not لَهُfor him مِجَنٌa shield
فَصَدَّso he swerved وَلَمand did not يُصادِفُهُstrike him جَسيسُa probing assailant
With a sword-blade; he had no shield.
He swerved, and no probing assailant struck him.
فَيَضرِبthen he strikes الشَمالَthe left paw إِلىtoward حَشاهُhis belly

وَقَدthough already نادىhe called out وَأَخلَفَهُand failed him الأَنيسُthe companion
Then he drove his left paw at the man's belly—
Though the man cried out, his companions failed him—
بِسَمرٍwith dusky claws كَالمَحالِقِlike razors فيin فُتوخٍsupple paws

With dusky claws like razors in supple paws,
Whose dense flesh shields them from the ground's sharp stones.
فَخَرَّso fell السَيفُthe sword وَاِختَلَفَتand moved alternately يَداهُhis two forepaws
وَكانَand it was بِنَفسِهِat the cost of his life وَقيتwere spared نُفوسُlives
The sword fell, and the lion's forepaws worked in turn;
And at the cost of that man's life, other lives were spared.
وَطارَand fled القَومُthe people شَتىin all directions وَالمَطاياand the mounts
وَغودِرَand was left فيin مُكَرّهمtheir wheeling-ground الرَسيسُthe steadfast one
The people scattered in flight, and so did the mounts,
And the steadfast beast remained where they had wheeled.
مُعاوِدُone repeatedly showing جُرأَةٍboldness وَقتَat the time of الهَواديthe leading beasts
أَشَمُّhigh-nosed كَأَنَّهُas though he رَجُلٌa man عَبوسُscowling
Bold time and again when the leading beasts come,
High-nosed, as though he were a scowling man.

When his forepaws clasp an opponent to him,
He is lost when the last breath comes.
وَجالَand he wheeled كَأَنَّهُas though he فَرسٌa horse صَنيعٌwell-tended

And he wheeled like a well-tended horse,
Trailing his caparisons, long-tailed and restive.
كَأَنَّas though بِنَحرِهِupon his breast وَبِمِنكَبَيهِand upon both his shoulders

As though upon his breast and both his shoulders
Were perfume a bride had spent the night blending.

He cleaves the thicket, bearing a spirit of ʿAbqar
On a back that has felt that spirit's touch.

Such is he: if you meet him, you will scatter,
And a dire tale will be told of you.
