They spent the day there at al-Qahr, in the land’s midst,
She remained under that oppression from her shepherd
between Uqaybayn and its Ranqa,
Between two hillocks to her folds

amid pasture that delighted the eye,
While the eye settled on her food
the earth’s grasses and its fruit-bearing growth.
Of the plants of the earth and its fruits

Until, when their interval between drinks was complete,
Until when her udders were full
and urine had caked upon their inner thighs,
And the urine leaked onto her companions

the weakest of their herdsmen gathered them,
And the weakest among her sheep-herds seized
as a maiden gathers a fold of her cloak.
The hem of her cloak in its folds

They remembered Taqtud, the coolness of its water,
She remembered to follow the coldness of her water
and the ancient shafts of its stone-lined wells.
And the common reed from her resting places

Then they outstripped the feeble one among their herdsmen,
So she dismissed the powerless among her sheep-herds
and reached at dawn a dishevelled man whom they had worn out,
And the morning found her unkempt from her trials

toiling at drawing water for their thirsty ones,
Blessing the pulling away at her udders
exhausted, spending the night in their shelter.
A tiliha who spends the night in her oases

They seemed, when they reached their water,
As if when she came to her water
a battalion that had rallied to its standard,
A battalion had come to its banners

The enemies had shaken it from meeting her
In their crowding and their headlong rush they almost
She almost trips in the crowds and in their assault

Dripping mucus from her sides
When a summer-born calf among their nurslings cries,
When the branded one turns from her food

an insistent, thunderlike roar rises from their song.
She bleats like thunder from her singing
