لَجَّتpersisted لِأَبناءِfor the sons of الزُبَيرِal-Zubayr مَآثِرٌglorious deeds
لَجَّت لِأَبناءِ الزُبَيرِ مَآثِرٌ
فيin المَكرُماتِnoble deeds وَبغرةٌand a downpour لاnot تُنجِمُabates
في المَكرُماتِ وَبغرةٌ لا تُنجِمُ
The sons of al-Zubayr have unceasing glories,
The sons of Zubayr have attained glorious deeds,
In noble deeds, and a downpour that never abates.
In generosity and unparalleled munificence.
فَإِلىso to ذراthe shelter of آلِthe house of الزُبَيرal-Zubayr بِفَضلِهِمthrough their bounty
فَإِلى ذرا آلِ الزُبَير بِفَضلِهِم
نِعمhow excellent الذراthe shelter فيin النائِباتِcalamities لناfor us هُمُthey
نِعم الذرا في النائِباتِ لنا هُمُ
So seek the shelter of al-Zubayr's house, for their bounty;
So to the descendants of Zubayr, by their merit,
What fine shelter they are for us in calamities!
Excellent are the descendants in trying times for us.
وَهُمُand they الحَوارِيّونَthe devoted companions قَدalready قُسِمَتhave been allotted لَهُمto them
وَهُمُ الحَوارِيّونَ قَد قُسِمَت لَهُم
إِنَّindeed المَداعِيَclaims to glory وَالمَساعيand noble deeds تُقسَمُare apportioned
إِنَّ المَداعِيَ وَالمَساعي تُقسَمُ
They are the devoted companions; their share has already been allotted them—
They are the disciples, to whom were apportioned
Indeed, claims to glory and noble deeds are apportioned.
Indeed claims and efforts are apportioned.
وَالعاطِفونَand those who come to aid تَحينat a time when ماnot مِنany عاطِفٍhelper
وَالعاطِفونَ تَحين ما مِن عاطِفٍ
وَالمطمعونَand those who inspire hope يَداًa hand إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle أَطعمواthey give food
وَالمطمعونَ يَداً إِذا ما أَطعموا
And those who come to aid when no helper remains,
The benefactors whose time of benefaction comes,
And those whose hands inspire hope whenever they feed,
And the ambitious whose hands when fed.
وَاللاحِقونَand those who make reach جِفانهُمtheir bowls قَمَعَthe tips of الذَراthe heights
وَاللاحِقونَ جِفانهُم قَمَعَ الذَرا
وَالمطعمونَand those who feed others زَمانَat the time of أَينَwhere is المطعِمُthe giver of food
وَالمطعمونَ زَمانَ أَينَ المطعِمُ
And those whose bowls reach the very summits,
The pursuers whose greed the descendants curbed,
And those who feed when the cry is, 'Where is the giver of food?'
And the providers where is the provision.
وَالمانِعونَand those who protect مِنَfrom الهَضيمَةِinjustice جارَهَمtheir neighbor
وَالمانِعونَ مِنَ الهَضيمَةِ جارَهَم
وَالحامِلونَand those who bear burdens إِذاwhen العَشيرَةُthe clan تَغرمُincurs a liability
وَالحامِلونَ إِذا العَشيرَةُ تَغرمُ
And those who shield their neighbor from injustice,
The preventers from digesting their neighbor
And those who shoulder the burden when the clan must pay.
And the carriers when the clan is fined.
الجودُgenerosity غالبهُمrules them وَفيهِمand in them نَجدَةٌvalor
الجودُ غالبهُم وَفيهِم نَجدَةٌ
وَفضيلَةٌand excellence عِندَin الخِطابِspeech وَميسَمُand a noble bearing
وَفضيلَةٌ عِندَ الخِطابِ وَميسَمُ
Generosity rules them, and in them is valor,
Generosity prevails among them, and among them are aid
And excellence in speech, and a noble bearing.
And merit in discourse and appointed time.
وَإِذاand if قَطَمتَهُمyou bite them قَطَمتَyou bite عَلاقِماًbitter colocynths
وَإِذا قَطَمتَهُم قَطَمتَ عَلاقِماً
وَقَواضيand deadly forms of الذيفانِvenom فيماin what تَقضِمُyou gnaw
وَقَواضي الذيفانِ فيما تَقضِمُ
And if you bite into them, you bite bitter colocynth,
And if you cut them off you cut off stakes
And deadly venoms in what you gnaw.
And the judges of lawsuits in what they arbitrate.
