حَنَّ الفُؤادُ إِلى سَلمى وَلَم تُصِبِ
فيمَwhy الكَثيرُso much مِنَof التحنانِyearning وَالطَرَبِand rapture
فيمَ الكَثيرُ مِنَ التحنانِ وَالطَرَبِ
The heart yearned for Salma, but you were mistaken.
The heart yearned for Salma though she was aloof,
Why so much yearning and rapture?
Why so much pining and passion in vain?

Su'ad said, "I see something strange in gray hair."
Suad said, I wonder at this streak of grey,
Easy, Su'ad: there is nothing strange in gray hair.
Gently, Suad, grey hair is nothing strange.

If you see me clothed by time in its grayness,
You see time has clad me in its greyness,
then the years that have passed have not passed you by.
What of it is past, from you was not hid.

Blessed rain on Su'da, now that gray hair has come upon us,
A draught to Suad though grey has pained us,
and before that, when the head had not yet turned gray.
Ere this when the head had no greying tress.

As though her saliva, after sleep, had drunk at evening
As though its saliva after distress dissolved
the Pleiades' rain, mixed with wine from Aleppo.
Towards the Pleiades with the wine of Halab.

I was gifted a brace of chicks, green young,
hard-driven trotting and the exhaustion of successive stages.
Half bones and strong smelling feet.

the daytime sun fills the heights of clamorous al-Abraq.
Sun of day fills the reins of the lightning steed.

At last, when the two had crossed, with night grown thick,
Till when they folded up and night wrapped in folds
the valley-bend of moringa and wild fig trees, from Dhu Ukayhif,
Of the cavern's owner, dry wood and brambles.

they make for the lord of Qays and the son of its lord,
They made for the chief of Kais and his chieftain's son,
and its unfailing horseman, no man of falsehood.
The knight pure of them other than the liar.

Muhammad, his father, and his son have wrought
Mohammed, his father and his son wrought
for him noble deeds of glory and ancestral honor.
For him feats of glory and noble deeds.

The two heated cauldrons seethe; the fire beneath them was kindled
The army of the faithful kindled fire beneath them,
by a hungry man who found himself at dusk in a valley rich in firewood.
Like torrent in a vale bearing firewood.

Merit over others from all the Arabs.

Unless you reward me for it, no one will recompense me;
None can fault me but you,
and who will give reward if you do not?
Who can praise me if you do not?
