She takes me to visit the pure-hearted chief; surely they are

Never-failing watering places when the people's water runs dry.

And if they wear Yemen's striped cloth and gather in council,

Their open hands move freely in generosity.

Steeped in the sap of herbage, amid layers

Of bodily form, not one of them left wanting.

A lofty, noble feature stood at her center, and she was graced

With a Mahri camel's resting-place, where the tail flickers.

So I said: Does a ring-necked dove weep, remembering

Hadil, who perished before Tubba‘ ever lived?

Springs spouted blood, as though they were

Shrikes fluttering low and flashing from the shanks.

And in the caravan—though one may only look and watch—

Are a people's noblewomen, beyond all hope of winning.

This heart of mine has formed a bond of love

That harms—if only, with the harm, it brought some good!
