Bound for the son of Yazid the Good, my mount spent the night

At Sawran: other mounts test her, and she tests them.

She complains of her two soles yet speeds on, as though she were

A sandgrouse in startled flight at night's end.

Women in howdahs from Qays ibn Aylan were driven away

By separation—indeed, separation bears a dagger.

They salute the man overflowing with bounty as he gives freely,

When the cheerless, withholding man shows no generosity.

Then, after that, a sundering time returned,

And fresh separation scattered them in every direction.

And a mail neck-guard whose ample spread covers the shoulders:

It was David's; its mesh was not loosely woven.

Then Dhu Halif, then al-Rawd—the meadow of Falajah,

Then its valley bends, with every thicket and tangled grove.
