Pure-born, a noble lady of a people of high lineage,

Cavalry squadrons and foot soldiers shoot in her defense.

    Seems washed in fragrant musk.

Her cheek is gold, her mouth of hailstones,

With spaced teeth, bright canines, and a polished gleam.

As though, when her bedfellow seeks a draught from it

After sleep, it were mingled with mellow, north-wind-cooled wine.

And her fragrance is like the scent of an untouched meadow,

Whose blossoms at Fayhan form garlands.

Two threshing-poles—ya’sul and ya’sul (sense uncertain).

Clear-skinned, pure white except at his throat,

As though it were smeared with the blood of the maknan plant.

Solitary in his pastures, ever watchful, he was offered

By every rise a charging-ground and a retreat.

Their flanks like Sind, thirsty and broad-hipped:

    A sturdy Mulayki she-camel, stallion-like, built up

Through two lush years by respite from breeding and freedom to graze.

As though from her girths a white bull had risen,

Dewclawed, cloaked in the darkness of night,

Until, when her foreparts drew near him,

And strands of foam hung along his two flanks.
