ماذاwhat بَداoccurred لَكَto you إِذwhen نَقَضتَyou broke هَواكاyour love
وَحَلَفتَand you swore أَنّيthat I لاnot أَشُمُّsmell قَفاكاthe back of your neck
What came over you when you renounced your love,
What seemed to you when you broke your passion
And swore that I would not smell the back of your neck?
And swore that I don't smell your scent
تَرضىyou accept العَجائِبَstrange things ثُمَّthen تَغضَبُyou grow angry أَنَّنيthat I

You accept strange things, then grow angry that I
You accept wonders then get angry that
Debated some matters with your brother.
I looked into some matters of your brother
مِثلَlike الَّتيthe woman who ضَنَّتbegrudged بِرَدِّreturning سَلامِهاher greeting
وَأَباحَتِand she freely offered الأَفخاذَthe thighs وَالأَوراكاand the hips
Like the woman who begrudged a greeting in reply,
Like the one who was stingy with returning greetings
Yet freely offered her thighs and hips.
And allowed thighs and intimate parts
إِنif كانَis ذاthis مِنfrom غيرَةٍjealousy قَدalready أَضرَمَتset ablaze
بِالغَيظِwith rage قَلبَكَyour heart خالِياًalone وَحَشاكاand your innermost being
If this stems from jealousy that has set ablaze
If this is out of jealousy that filled
With rage your heart and your innermost being, in solitude,
Your heart empty and desolate
فَاِحلِفthen swear بِأَنَّthat سِوايَanyone other than me لَمhas not يَظفَرwon بِهاit
وَعَلَيَّand upon me نَذرٌa vow إِنif لَقيتُI meet سِواكاanyone other than you
Then swear that no one but me has won it,
Then swear that no one else attained it
And I am bound by a vow if I meet anyone but you.
And I take an oath if I meet anyone else
فَإِذاso if أَبَيتَyou refuse فَقَدthen indeed أَبَيتَyou have refused مَعالِناًopenly
فَاِعلَمthen know فَدَيتُكَmay I be your ransom أَنَّthat ذاكَthat بِذاكاfor that
So if you refuse, you have refused openly;
If you refuse then you openly refuse
Then know—may I be your ransom—that this is for that.
So know, my ransom, that this is that
