فيtoward عاشِقٍa lover طالَlasted long بِهِin him خَبلُهُhis madness
Well-proportioned, yet his justice lacks balance
A moderate man whose moderation was unequaled
toward a lover whose madness has long endured.
In a lover whose obsession grew long with him
أَطَرفُهُis his gaze أَحسَنُmore beautiful أَمor ظِرفُهُhis charm
أَوor وَجهُهُhis face أَحسَنُmore beautiful أَمor عَقلُهُhis mind
Is his gaze lovelier, or his charm?
Are his glances more beautiful or his charm?
Or is his face lovelier, or his mind?
Or is his face more beautiful or his mind?
أُنظُرlook فَماfor whatever عايَنتَyou have seen فيin غَيِّهِhis waywardness
مِنof حَسَنٍbeauty فَهوَthen it لَهُbelongs to him كُلُّهُall of it
Look: whatever you behold in his waywardness
Look - whatever beauty you see in his absence
of beauty—all of it belongs to him.
Is all his, entire
لَوif قيلَwere said لِلحُسنِto Beauty تَمَنّىwish المُنىwishes
إِذَنthen تَمَنّىit would wish أَنَّهُthat it were مِثلُهُlike him
If Beauty were told, 'Make your wishes,'
If perfection were asked to name its desire
it would then wish to be like him.
It would wish it were just like him
أَيُّwhat خِصالٍqualities حازَهاhe has attained them سَيِّديmy lord
لَوif only لَمdid not يُكَدِّرcloud صَفوَهاtheir purity مَطلُهُhis delays
What qualities my lord has attained—
What attributes has my master acquired
if only his delays did not cloud their purity!
If only the arrival of his supplies wouldn't muddy his serenity
