عُثمانُUthman لاdo not تَلهَجdwell بِذِكرِon the mention of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
عُثمانُ لا تَلهَج بِذِكرِ مُحَمَّدٍ
يَنهاكَforbids you طولُlength المَجدِglory عَنهُfrom him وَعَرضُهُand its breadth
يَنهاكَ طولُ المَجدِ عَنهُ وَعَرضُهُ
Uthman, do not dwell on the mention of Muhammad;
Othman, do not speak ill of Muhammad,
the length and breadth of glory bar you from him.
His glory in length and breadth prevents you,
يَغتالُannihilates بَذلَكَyour giving كُلَّهُall of it إِمساكُهُhis withholding
يَغتالُ بَذلَكَ كُلَّهُ إِمساكُهُ
وَيَفوتُand surpasses بَسطَكَyour open-handedness فيin المَكارِمِnoble deeds قَبضُهُhis closed-handedness
وَيَفوتُ بَسطَكَ في المَكارِمِ قَبضُهُ
His withholding annihilates all your giving,
All this withholding does him wrong,
and his closed hand surpasses your open hand in noble deeds.
And misses your open hand in noble deeds.
فَكَأَنَّso it is as though عِرضَكَyour honor فيin السُهولَةِsmoothness وَجهُهُhis face
فَكَأَنَّ عِرضَكَ في السُهولَةِ وَجهُهُ
وَكَأَنَّand it is as though وَجهَكَyour face فيin الحُزونَةِroughness عِرضُهُhis honor
وَكَأَنَّ وَجهَكَ في الحُزونَةِ عِرضُهُ
Thus your honor is like his face in its smoothness,
So it's as if your honor's his easy face,
and your face is like his honor in its roughness.
And your face in sorrow is his honor.
