بِمُحَمَّدٍthrough Muhammad صارَbecame الزَمانُtime مُحَمَّداًmuch-praised
بِمُحَمَّدٍ صارَ الزَمانُ مُحَمَّداً
عِنديin my eyes وَأَعتَبَand made amends بَعدَafter سَوءِthe evil of فِعالِهِits deeds
عِندي وَأَعتَبَ بَعدَ سَوءِ فِعالِهِ
Through Muhammad, time became praiseworthy
With Muhammad virtue did the time become Muhammad
in my eyes, and made amends after its ill deeds.
In my view, though after his bad deeds I blamed him
بِمُرَوَّقِthrough one refined in الأَخلاقِcharacter لَوif عاشَرتَهُyou kept his company
بِمُرَوَّقِ الأَخلاقِ لَو عاشَرتَهُ
لَرَأَيتَyou would see نُجحَكَyour success مِنfrom جَميعِall خِصالِهِhis qualities
لَرَأَيتَ نُجحَكَ مِن جَميعِ خِصالِهِ
Through one of refined character—if you kept his company,
Had you met the refined one in manners you'd have seen
you would find your success through all his qualities.
Your success in all his traits that made him win
مَنone who وَدَّنيloved me بِلِسانِهِwith his tongue وَبِقَلبِهِand with his heart
مَن وَدَّني بِلِسانِهِ وَبِقَلبِهِ
وَأَنالَنيand gave to me بِيَمينِهِwith his right hand وَشِمالِهِand his left hand
وَأَنالَني بِيَمينِهِ وَشِمالِهِ
One who loved me with his tongue and with his heart,
Who drew me near with his tongue and heart
and gave to me with his right hand and his left.
And gave me with both hands all he could impart
أَبَداًalways يُفيدُhe offers غَرائِباًmarvels مِنfrom ظَرفِهِhis wit
أَبَداً يُفيدُ غَرائِباً مِن ظَرفِهِ
وَرَغائِباًand coveted gifts مِنfrom جودِهِhis generosity وَنَوالِهِand his bounty
وَرَغائِباً مِن جودِهِ وَنَوالِهِ
He always offers marvels from his wit,
Will always bounties give so strangely kind
and coveted gifts from his generosity and bounty.
And graces from his munificence designed
وَسَأَلتَand you asked عَنabout أَمريmy affairs فَسَلso ask عَنabout أَمرِهِhis affairs
وَسَأَلتَ عَن أَمري فَسَل عَن أَمرِهِ
دونيinstead of me فَحاليfor my condition قِطعَةٌa part مِنof حالِهِhis condition
دوني فَحالي قِطعَةٌ مِن حالِهِ
And you have asked about my affairs—so ask about his
When you would ask about me, ask about him
instead of mine, for my condition is a part of his.
For I'm a piece split off from his life dim
لَوif كُنتَyou were شاهِدَa witness to بَذلِهِhis giving لَشَهِدتَyou would have testified ليfor me
لَو كُنتَ شاهِدَ بَذلِهِ لَشَهِدتَ لي
بِوارِثَةٍto an inheritance أَوor شِركَةٍa partnership فيin مالِهِhis wealth
بِوارِثَةٍ أَو شِركَةٍ في مالِهِ
Had you witnessed his giving, you would have testified that I had
Had you seen his bounty, you'd witness for me
an inheritance or a partnership in his wealth.
A legacy or share held in his property
