ساقَتbrought إِلَيكَto you رَجاءَهُhis hope هِمَمُهhis aspirations
This is the letter of a young man with aspirations.
This is the book of a young man with ambition
His aspirations have brought his hope to you.
His hopes have led him to you, driven by determination
غَلَّshackled الزَمانُtime يَدَيthe two hands of عَزيمَتِهِhis resolve
وَهَوَتand plunged بِهِwith him مِنfrom حالِقٍa lofty height قَدَمُهhis foot
Time has shackled both hands of his resolve,
Yet time has bound the hands of his resolve
And his foot has sent him plunging from a lofty height.
And he has fallen from the grasp of his aspirations
وَتَواكَلَتهُand each left him to the others ذَووthose sharing قَرابَتِهِhis kinship
وَطَواهُand hid him عَنfrom أَكفائِهِhis peers عَدَمُهhis poverty
And his kinsfolk have each left his care to the others,
While his own kin have left him to his own devices
And his poverty has hidden him from his peers.
And his inadequacy has obscured him from his peers
أَفضىconfided إِلَيكَto you بِسِرِّهِhis secret قَلَمٌa pen
لَوif كانَwere يَعقِلُهُto understand it بَكىwould weep قَلَمُهhis pen
A pen has confided his secret to you;
A pen confides in you his innermost secrets
If his pen could understand it, it would weep.
If it could understand, its pen would have wept
