The vicissitudes of an age deaf to reproach

lie in wait with fears and afflictions.

The world's milk has dried up, for now she takes

our souls by measure, without reckoning.

Had she appeared unveiled, she would have been scorned; but

her beauty behind the veil has bewitched humankind.

Indeed, time's vicissitudes excel at bestowing

calamities upon those of noble lineage.

    Thus, after greening, there withers—

before the meadow in the hollows—the meadow on the heights.

Its eye never turned away from the valiant until

it shook the pillar of lordly Himyar.

It struck down among them one lovely as a diver's pearl

and as a statue in a sanctuary:

the purest of the pure, the most splendid of the

splendid among them, the choicest of the choice.

Gone, O Muhammad, are the radiant ones among your

bright days—how utterly they have gone!

The grave and the earth made your face frown,

a face that neither frowned nor scowled.

The grave and the earth extinguished your shining mind

at a time when minds were in darkness.

And you took instead an abode plainly

    barren, called 'the severer of ties';

a desolate abode, though it is

peopled by the presence of friend and loved ones.

O blazing star gone dark for the house of Ubayd

Allah—how grievous the loss of this blazing star!

A tender flower brought forth by

glory, in a bed of lovely surroundings.

A disposition like wine, or like grains of

musk, or like blended perfume, or like saffron perfume.

    And admirable modesty, without inarticulacy,

and radiant youth, without affected youthfulness.

The days cast him down from their back,

after his foot had been set firmly in the stirrup,

when he rivaled youth, and the world

stood with its doors open to him.

And he resembled a keen, adorned sword, save that

his ornaments were jewels of refinement.

And, fresh in judgment and resolve, he was adept,

and fresh in bounty, fresh in youth.

Death made straight for him until

it bestowed the beauty of his face upon the dust.
