وَقَناتُهُand its spear أَمسَتhas become بِغَيرِwithout سِنانِa spearhead
The hand of generosity is now without fingers,
The palm's dew no longer bears fruit,
and its spear is now without a point.
And its channels are now without teeth.
جَبَلُthe mountain الجِبالِof mountains غَدَتcame عَلَيهِupon him مُلِمَّةٌa calamity

A calamity befell the mountain of mountains,
The mountain of mountains became covered with darkness upon it,
leaving him with his pillars shattered.
It left it demolished and wrecked.

بِكرٍmaiden مِنَamong الغاراتِthe raids أَوor لِعَوانِto a renewed raid
I announce Umayr ibn al-Walid's death to a raid—
I mourn for Umair ibn Al-Walid from an attack,
a maiden raid among raids, or to one renewed.
An early attack or from traitors.
I announce the death of فَتىthe youth الفِتيانِof youths غَيرَnot مُكَذَّبٍcontradicted

I announce the death of the youth of youths, with none disputing
I mourn the youth of youths without being denied,
my words, and I announce the death of the horseman of horsemen.
My words mourn the horseman of horsemen.
عَثَرَtripped up الزَمانُTime وَنائِباتُand the calamities صُروفِهِits changing fortunes
بِمُقيلِناupon our rescuer عَثَراتِthe stumbles of كُلِّevery زَمانِage
Time and the calamities of its changing fortunes have tripped up
Time stumbled and so did the turns of its catastrophes,
our rescuer from the stumbles of every age.
Our sun set with the stumbles of all time.
لَمdid not يَترُكِleave الحَدَثانُfate يَومَthe day سَطاstruck بِهِat him
أَحَداًanyone نَصولُwe assail بِهِwith his aid عَلىagainst الحَدَثانِfate
On the day fate struck him, it did not leave
The two calamities did not leave intact anyone they assaulted,
anyone with whose aid we could assail fate.
None escape their assault upon the calamities.
قَدindeed كُنتَyou were حِشوَthe filling of الدِرعِthe coat of mail ثُمَّthen أَراكَI see you قَدalready
أَصبَحتَyou have become حِشوَthe filling of اللَحدِthe grave وَالأَكفانِand the shrouds
Once you filled the coat of mail; now I see you have
You were once the stuffing of armor but now
come to fill the grave and the shrouds.
You’ve become the stuffing of a coffin and shroud.
شُغِلَتwere occupied قُلوبُthe hearts الناسِthe people ثُمَّthen عُيونُهُمtheir eyes
مُذsince مُتَّyou died بِالخَفقانِwith throbbing وَالهَمَلانِand streaming tears
People's hearts, and then their eyes, have been occupied,
People’s hearts and then their eyes were preoccupied
since you died, with throbbing and streaming tears.
Since you left fluttering and confused.
وَاِستَعذَبواand they found sweet الأَحزانَsorrows حَتّىso much that إِنَّهُمthey indeed
يَتَحاسَدونَenvy one another مَضاضَةَthe bitter pain of الأَحزانِsorrows
And they found sorrow sweet, so much that they
And they made sorrows sweet until they
envy one another the bitter pangs of sorrow.
Envy the bitterness of sorrows.
يَشتاقُlongs إِنسانٌa person إِلىfor إِنسانِa person
No one turns to another, nor
No one cares for anyone nor
does one person long for another.
Does a human long for a human.
أَأَصابَdid it find? مِنكَfrom you المَوتُDeath فُرصَةَan opening ساعَةٍa moment
فَعَداand so it attacked عَلَيكَagainst you وَأَنتُماwhile you two were أَخَوانِbrothers
Did Death find a moment's opening against you,
Did death get an opportunity for an hour from you
then attack you, though you two were brothers?
And so assailed you while you were brothers?
فَمَنِso whom الَّذيthe one whom أَبقىit spared لِيَومِfor a day of تَكَرُّمٍgenerosity
وَمَنِand whom الَّذيthe one whom أَبقىit spared لِيَومِfor a day of طِعانِspear combat
Whom, then, has it spared for a day of generosity,
So who remains for the day of generosity
and whom has it spared for a day of spear combat?
And who remains for the day of piercing?
مَنwho يَدفَعِwards off الكُرَبَthe afflictions العِظامَthe great إِذاwhen اِلتَقَتcome together

Who will ward off great afflictions when there meet
Who can withstand the great afflictions when they come together
in a narrow place the rings of every saddle-girth?
In dire straits the rings of every misfortune?
حَمّالُa mighty bearer of ماthat which لَوif حَلَّfell أَصغَرُهُthe least of it عَلىupon

A mighty bearer of burdens—had the least of them fallen upon
Bearer of burdens, if their smallest descended
Thahlan, the summits of Thahlan would have collapsed.
Upon misfortunes, their motes would collapse misfortunes.
