أَغمِدsheathe عَنِaway from المُهجاتِthe hearts سَيفَthe sword of الناظِرِthe eye
فَلَقَدfor indeed فَتَرنَthey grew faint مِنَfrom اللِحاظِthe gaze الفاتِرِlanguid
Sheathe the sword of your gaze, away from our souls;
Sheathe the eye’s sword, sparing hearts;
for they have grown faint beneath the languid glance.
for they have grown faint from the languid gaze.
كَيفَhow اِعتَدَلتَyou were well-balanced مَعَwith اِعتِدالِthe poise of الغُصنِthe branch فيin
حَرَكاتِهِits movements وَفَعَلتَand you acted فِعلَthe act of الجائِرِthe tyrant
How did you share the bough’s grace and balance in
How have you matched the branch’s poise in
its movements, yet commit the deed of a tyrant?
its movements, yet acted like a tyrant?
وَعَلِمتَand you knew إِثمَthe sinfulness of السِحرِmagic حينَwhen ذَمَمتَهُyou condemned it
وَأَراكَand I see you مُتَّخِذاًusing أَداةَthe instrument of الساحِرِthe sorcerer
You knew the sin of sorcery when you condemned it,
And you knew the sinfulness of magic when you condemned it,
yet I see you wielding a sorcerer’s instrument.
yet I see you using the sorcerer’s instrument.
ياO شاعِراًa poet فيin طَرفِهِhis gaze وَبَهائِهِand his splendor
وَجَمالِهِand his beauty عَذَّبتَyou tormented قَلبَthe heart of الشاعِرِthe poet
O poet in your glance and radiant splendor,
O poet in your gaze and splendor
and in your beauty—you have tormented the poet’s heart.
and beauty—you have tormented the poet’s heart.
