    وَعادَ قَتاداً عِندَها كُلُّ مَرقَدِ

    She went by night, seeking refuge in tears, fearing tomorrow's parting;

and every resting place became a thornbush to her.

What saved her from death's engulfing flood was that it was

the turning away of separation, not deliberate rejection.

So apprehension made her shed rose-red tears,

of blood, flowing over a rose-red cheek.

She is the full moon; her face's loving charm suffices her

with everyone she meets, even when she makes no loving overture.

Yet I never amassed a gathered fortune

and won it save with my company scattered.

Nor did the days grant me tranquil sleep

to savor, save at the price of restless sleep.

Long residence among one's people wears out

the brocade of one's two cheeks; go abroad and be renewed.

For I have seen the sun become more beloved

to people because it is not forever above them.

I swore by the Lord of bright swords whose broad sides bleed,

and by the Lord of lances, bent and broken:

Muhammad al-Samiti's sword has indeed quelled

the agonies of vengeance for Muhammad al-Samiti.

Through him, God struck Babak and his governors

with a back-breaking calamity in every encounter:

one more generous in bounty than bright rain clouds,

and braver than time's reversals, and more valiant.

When we called him the auspicious, receding-haired one,

he called him the bald, ill-omened one—and not unjustly.

A youth who, on the Khurramiyya's day at Badhdh, was not

a timid weakling, nor one who fled.

Halt, you two, at Sandabaya, as the lances charge,

guided toward the hidden soul, finding their way.

Night turned death away from Muawiya there,

and time's perils had no doubt that he was doomed.

By my life, you would have scorched him the day you met him,

had fate alone not cooled the heat.

If destiny contradicted you concerning him,

it did not contradict you concerning his followers.

And at Arshaq, amid battle, while the horses hurled themselves

with their champions into a blazing inferno,

you tore Babak's resolve, despite the foes,

with your endurance, like rending bordered Athami cloth.

So if he did not flee with his body cut to strips

there, he fled with his resolve cut to strips.

The spears had already caught sight of his heart,

but fate's outstretched veil made their eyes sore.

Muqan had been the home of his migration; indeed,

you swept into it with cavalry—what an entry!

There, on the day of Aruba, you brought his might low,

though he had dwelt between Nasr and Farqad.

He saw you with sound counsel and a straight lance in battle,

girding yourself there in daring, and wearing it as a cloak.

Sound counsel does not dispel distress

when it is not accompanied by a well-aimed lance.

So he fled, obedient to the spearheads, schooled

in fear and retreat such as he had never known.

He had been the tough, mighty one; yet you stripped him,

with fine, pure swordplay, of his fine endurance.

By my life, you left the well of his heart

within a short rope's reach of the lances, easy to draw from.

Its depth had been beyond every water-drawer's reach,

but you left it to be drawn from and drunk by hand.

To Upper Kadhaj, ambition raised you,

aspiring high, where victory comes at evening and dawn.

It had pierced Ibn Khazim's nose with humiliation,

and its strongholds had baffled Yazid ibn Mazyad.

So with daring you fettered their unfettered might,

and loosed upon them every fettered death.

And on the hills of Abrishtawim and Darwadh,

the lance points rose with you—rise higher, and gain still more!

There the keen blades won you glorious deeds,

to live as long as time, if not forever.

And the night you met the night attack with its due measure

of endurance, in an hour bereft of endurance:

    وَيا سَيفُ لا تَكفُر وَيا ظُلمَةُ اِشهَدي

    O charge, do not deny him his composure;

O sword, be not ungrateful; O darkness, bear witness!

O night, had I been in your place afterward,

I would never have passed a night in this world in broken sleep.

Battles bearing victory's root and branch,

whether excellence is counted or left uncounted.

So whatever battle comes hereafter will be nothing

but a fine deed of yours repeated.

The merits of all kinds of singers are many,

yet the victory reeds are Ma'bad's alone.

You cleared the darkness from Azerbaijan after it

had cloaked itself in a dusky hue, like a cloud.

Once, dawn there was not white,

but now night there is not black.

Babak saw from you what had risen upon him

with ill fortune, but with good omens for the upright faith.

You brandished against him a sword of guile; only

while it stays undrawn are necks severed by it.

It delights the one who strikes with it while it is sheathed,

and disgraces whoever strikes with it unsheathed.

And I indeed hope you will hang around his neck

a necklace of an Indian blade with a polished tip,

strung with death, its ornaments benefiting

its bestower among men, rather than its wearer.

Toward you we tore night's dark mantle, as though

the lands had kohled their eyes with antimony from it.

The pale Mahri camels and their dark ones jolt me

over every long, straight ridge and broad plain.

They toss a serpent across the horizons, as though

he were turning a strip of a file between his jaws.

Your bounty rescued those seeking gifts, and they awoke

with no promised gift left withheld.

Whenever a mill turns, you generously set turning

the mill of every fulfillment for every promise.

I came to you; I sought no refuge where there was none,

nor sought my needs where they could not be found.

Others may hope for a distant man's kindness, but

my hand, amid calamities, has relied only on my own hand.
