وَالدَمعُ يَحمِلُ بَعضَ ثِقلَ المُغرَمِ
She scattered choice pearls of tears, never strung,
She shed Farid's tears that flowed unharnessed,
and tears bear some of the love-stricken one's burden.
And tears bear some weight of the enamored one.
وَصَلَتshe mingled دُموعاًtears بِالنَجيعِwith fresh blood فَخَدُّهاso her cheek

She mingled tears with fresh blood, so her cheek
Her tears reached the stream, so its cheek
is like the border of a patterned cloak.
Became like the embroidered robe's hem lined.

She became distraught, and everything apart from her grew dark,
She became distracted so everything around her darkened,
while every dark thing in her shone.
Yet everything dark was illuminated through her.

مُهراقَةٌ مِن ماءِ وَجهي أَو دَمي
It was as though her tear, the evening she bade farewell,
It was as if her crying one evening was bidding farewell,
was poured from the water of my face, or my blood.
My face shedding its water or blood.

طَعمَ الفِراقِ فَذَمَّ طَعمَ العَلقَمِ
Weak grew the limbs of him whom distance made to taste
The limbs of one who tastes separation are weakened,
the flavor of parting; he scorned the taste of colocynth.
When the taste of parting made the taste of union bitter.

It is a death, except that those it touches are spared
It is as though dead save for the well-being of its people,
two things: the earth and mourning.
Of two handfuls of dust and the coffin.

If you wish all your thoughts to turn black,
If you want your every suspicion to be pitch-black,
then let them roam among this vast multitude.
Defer it to this greatest darkness.

No friend is he who lends you an outward appearance
A friend is not one who lends you a smiling face,
smiling over a scowling inward self.
While inside he harbors a frowning one.

So let the youths convey from me to Malik
that whenever they are chipped, I fall to pieces.
That whenever they are wounded, I crumble.

And let the days know that I am their conqueror
through Abu al-Husayn, Muhammad ibn al-Haytham,
By my father al-Husayn Muhammad Ibn al-Haytham.

through a radiant man who has no twin, whose right hand
With the most delicate, who is no twin, and his right hand
comes morning and night with twin gifts.
Rises and falls with the twin sword.

I have told the man deceived by his pardon—
I said to the resentful because of his reconciliation,
and a brother of slumber, had he not slept, would not have dreamed—
"A person of dignity, even if he doesn't sleep, becomes wise."

His resentment will not mend you, it may
a valley can destroy you without being filled to overflowing.”
Lead you to a valley not yet flooding.

Delegations urged their pale camels toward al-Jazira with song,
Delegations to the peninsula renewed its liveliness,
from those whose homes lie in Najd or Tihama.
Whether supporters in their abodes or dissenters.

As though, but for the rites, a share had been granted
As if, were it not for the rituals,
to its courts in the pilgrimage gathering—or they had been preferred for it.
Its yards would be filled with idols or pilgrimage seasons.

He seems, amid their praises, to be in a garden,
As if their praise of it in a garden,
and they, through his bounty, to be at a sharing-out of riches.
And their criticism of it in a hostile gathering.

Devoted to nurturing glory, he maintains that
Burdened with the Lord of Glory, he claims
no favor has been begun if it is left unfinished.
No custom was initiated if not completed.

Noble deeds have strung for him the beads of praise,
Generosities strung together the pearls of praise,
breathing into the knots of a tongue struck dumb.
Which they blow into the mute tongue's necklace.

His little holds al-Simak's plenty, even when it becomes
Much forbearance in his heart, and if it pours forth
torrential; his hands' effortless giving is al-Mirzam's utmost effort.
It is pouring, and his hands' pardoning the crop's bounty.

He served the heights of glory, and they served him—heights that
He served the eminent, so they served him, and they
never serve men unless they are served.
Do not serve the tribes unless first served.

And if he is affiliated with some noble lineage
the next says to him, “You have arrived; press onward.”
The other says to him, "You have advanced."

What harm to a splendid man who rises through aspiration
What harm if the most magnificent ascends in aspiration
sublime, that he does not rise upon a ladder?
Lofty, disdaining to ascend a ladder?

Your honor is guarded against being left a target
Your honor refuses to abandon a position
by your wealth around it, itself exposed to slaughter.
Surrounded by the owner of the sharpened sword.

Inherited wealth, however precious its worth,
Indeed, rising to the level of its merit
cannot humble crises unless it is itself humbled.
Does not coerce crises unless coerced.

Calamities are not mastered, nor is any
One cannot be blamed for misfortunes, nor can
noble gift judged fair, unless that wealth is wronged.
Injustice be seen as half if not completely darkened.

And a deed you gifted to an experienced man
yet still a nubile maiden, on a penniless man seeking refuge in you.
Who sought refuge in you, despondent.

It took the place of a gift from a virgin, and indeed
the giver sent it forth like a previously married bride.
It was presented by the giver like a bereaved woman.

Let your passion for generosity grow with what you see
So it may increase your passion with generosity what you see
of glory's alchemy; you will grow rich and reap rewards.
Of the alchemy of glory, singing and gaining.

Praise travels across the breadth of mankind,
Indeed, praise travels about as a loan among people
while in height its station is above the stars.
And its place is high above the stars.

And when kindnesses are darkened you dress them
in cheer like the flash of a keen-edged sword.
In good tidings like the sparkling sharp swords.

You gave what you did not give, and if
the grace of welcome ended, you would have withheld what you did not withhold.
The beauty of the meeting expired, you spared what you did not forbid.

You were created with a nature as though its reins
cut from the virtues of the rumbling cloud.
Were braided from the easy, pouring clouds' nature.

If I said some or all of it
in Hatim, I would be called a man evading a debt.
Was embodied in Hatim, I'd be accused of being enamored.

They were renowned so they do not cease falling
at the poor man's poverty, even before their substance does.
In its meaning's name before the negator.

The poems have made for you as wandering strays,
Indeed, the poems made you their purpose
and sought sanctuary in your bounty before I sought it.
So they became unlawful to you before being unlawful to me.

They did not halt to rest until a horseman was brought to you
It was not yet wedded when the steeds of its vitality came to you
by their first vigor; the raid comes before the spoils.
With their raids and gains before the profits.

So I made its custodian my conscience and enabled it
over it; so they became a steward to their steward.
Through him, so it became custodian to the custodian.

and range within the shelter of hoary hope.
And returns to the wing of towering hope.

And more delightful than the beloved's saliva in the mouth.
