Perhaps you remember the ancient ruined campsite,

And honor your pledges at its traces,

And describe a she-camel that leaves the Mehri camels

Bound to swift pacing or a trot.

And you have headed for the House of God, worn thin,

    Upon a sturdy, lean, swift-traveling she-camel.

I reached al-Qadisiyyah while she was gazing

At me with the eye of an accursed devil.

She had not brought us to Usfan before

She gazed with the gaze of Luqman the Wise.

Night travel changed her rashness into forbearance,

And slashed her hide as leather is slashed.

Crossing the deserts melted away her hump,

And the seething sweat tore her skin.

Her folding up the wasteland in swift strides wore her thin,

Toward the mountains of Mecca and al-Hatim.

Her strides hurled the sons of sin onward,

    Hastening toward a generous Lord,

Across every trackless waste with far-distant bounds,

As though its scorching heat were the blaze of Hell.

I say to her, after she has conveyed with an eye

To me the plaint of one wasting away in sickness:

Your early-rising rider is the finest poet of all humans and jinn,

And the most richly endowed of people with genuine ancestral honor.

Why, then, do you complain when you are beneath me,

And beneath Muhammad, the full moon among the stars?

Whenever noonday heat parches you, look to

His fingertips; they will quench your thirst with the breeze.

And if a dark night shrouds you, cleared away

By his radiant brow is the gloom of pitch-black night.

Then she went on as a martyr walks,

    Upright on a straight path.

And but for God, on the day at Mina she would have revealed

Her love—every woman with a slender waist.

They shot at a man of exile and sorrow

    With a wild-cow calf's eyes and a gazelle's neck.
