Perhaps a homeland will bring them near—perhaps;
Perhaps a homeland will come closer through them, and perhaps
and may the days make amends for them—perhaps.
The days will blame them, but most likely

They have a dwelling that once, with fair women like oryx,
For them is a dwelling that was like a full moon in Al-Bayda’
was eloquent in its haunts, then became mute.
The melody of songs, then it became incomprehensible

And the eyes of onlookers were cast down in humiliation
though once the gaze returned from it honored.
When it had been such that gazes were honored

robed in beauty, for a phantom that greets;
The cloak of beauty fell away as a surrendered phantom

When fighting against unyielding heroes

They make the two armlets - jeweled and studded - clash

Through the ample bounty of the emir Muhammad,
With the perfect favors of the Prince Muhammad
one once destitute drove great herds of livestock with song.
He blocked the onslaughts of money from whoever was preventing it

And alighted among the silent ones, folding up his tent
having dwelt a while with Adi ibn Akhzam.
Though it had been an age since, in 'Adiyy son of Akhzam

He saw the thoroughbred made arrogant through might as a she-camel

And the she-camel through injustice as a thoroughbred

When they extend to him half the nose-rein he dies
but if they revel in wronging him, he is more unjust still.
And if they pasture in his darkness, it becomes darker

The two forts have indeed, after they
seeing humiliation's vanguard come singly and in pairs.
Saw abasement hastening have both become desolate

For them you cut off misguidance's nose in a battle
You have severed the fingers of unbelief from them with a blow
in whose murk you cut down those who perished.
At Ma'ymaz, then pursued them at ar-Rūm, palms and wrists

How many mountains in al-Baṭṭ you have threatened against them
before that, at Maymadh, it had been slit-nosed.
And many a faint-hearted coward you have made bold, even if he is cowardly

is a people's might breached without collapsing.
Even if they had not struck, he would have been most timid

At Maymadh you severed unbelief's fingertips among them,
So when its rulings were refused by old-age, your spear points undertook them
then followed them up, among the Romans, with a hand and wrist.
When the old man had squandered his wisdom

and a wayward fool you taught sense—if only he could learn!
Then redden his two twisted, stiff shoulders

with white thagham; without their stroke it would have been dark indigo.
A pool from the cistern of patience, filled up

And horsemen aided him in the darkness of night
your spears, arbiters of what gray hair had neglected.
You would think them, in the gloom of night, stars

When the two Bishrs met, our Bishr prepared
With the early-morning youths of the dawn, and so they forced
for their Bishr a basin brimming with bitter aloe.

He is the piercing battle cry - Muhammad -
whom you would take for stars in the coal-black night.

He launched the youths of morning, and so they hated
about him, like a necklace you have strung in order.

Around a man of noble, unveiled face—had he sought disgrace,
He is two edges of time, which in its beginning
he would have veiled himself in darkness's cloak.
We were heedless of, but which has now become distinguished

that, from afar, instilled shame in him; so he pressed on.

The Romans saw in the morning that they, when they saw
though he had thought to ride sin bareback, he drew back.
The two armies meet in the morning, were themselves

He had declared: "Either, after this, I shall be left
Two decaying old men pulled tight their loincloths
a great man, or I shall be left as bones."
And their resting place was near al-Muzaffar

when a death-bearing storm moans and rumbles.
It would have wearied the youths of wishes and imagining

And assisted in the height of the land and was rapacious

With another, and the best victory is that which is stained with blood

If it did not detract from Friday, it would remain
And time has not been reminded that it
our feast and festival for as long as days endure.
Has a son like the day of Sabbath, except by smiling
وَماand never ذَكَرَrecalled الدَهرُTime العَبوسُfrowning بِأَنَّهُthat it
لَهُit has اِبنٌa son كَيَومِlike the day of السَبتِSaturday إِلّاexcept تَبَسَّماit smiled
Frowning Time never recalls that
And there did not remain in the land of the Bald a single bird
it has a son like Saturday without smiling.
Or beast except that it passed the night whimpering
وَلَمand not يَبقَremained فيin أَرضِthe land of البَقَلّارَal-Baqallar طائِرٌa bird
وَلاnor سَبعٌa wild beast إِلّاexcept وَقَدand indeed باتَspent the night مولِماhosting a feast
Not a bird remained in the land of al-Baqallar,
And on that day they did not raise a single banner
nor a wild beast, without hosting a feast that night.
Or stone except that they saw blood beneath it
وَلاand not رَفَعواthey lifted فيon ذَلِكَthat اليَومِday إِثلِباًa clod
وَلاnor حَجَراًa stone إِلّاexcept وَرَأَواand they saw تَحتَهُbeneath it دَماblood
They lifted no clod on that day,
They threw Ibn Ḥarb’s son at them – he let his swords loose among them
nor any stone, without seeing blood beneath it.
So for us it was a wedding, and for polytheism, a funeral
رُمواthey were assailed بِاِبنِby a son of حَربٍwar سَلَّhe drew فيهِمagainst them سُيوفَهُhis swords
فَكانَتso they were لَناfor us عُرساًa wedding feast وَلِلشِركِand for polytheism مَأتَماa funeral
They were struck by a son of war who drew his swords against them;
Most ruthless of heart towards them
the swords were a wedding feast for us, a funeral for polytheism.
Of all the sons of women, whose heart did not soften except to show mercy
أَفَظُّthe harshest of بَنيthe sons of حَوّاءَEve قَلباًin heart عَلَيهِمُtoward them
وَلَمand not يَقسُhardened مِنهُin him القَلبُthe heart إِلّاexcept لِيُرحَماso mercy might be shown
The harshest-hearted of Eve's sons toward them,
Whenever they sinned, he would redden the valleys with their blood
his heart hardened only so that mercy might be shown.
And if he did not find a sin upon them, he would blame
إِذاwhen أَجرَمواthey committed offenses قَنّاhe reddened القَناthe spears مِنwith دِمائِهِمtheir blood
وَإِنand if لَمnot يَجِدhe finds جُرماًan offense عَلَيهِمagainst them تَجَرَّماhe invents a charge
When they offend, he reddens the spears with their blood;
He is the lion, lion of the forest, ferocious and helping
and if he finds no offense to their charge, he invents one.
Though showing them a kind face and honoring
هُوَhe is اللَيثُthe lion لَيثُthe lion of الغابِthe woods بَأساًin might وَنَجدَةًand courage
وَإِنthough كانَhe is أَحياmore modest مِنهُthan it وَجهاًof face وَأَكرَماand more generous
He is the lion, the woodland lion, in might and courage,
Most forceful in his advance between two coats of mail
though more modest of face than it, and more generous.
And most handsome of face between two coats of pilgrim sanctity
أَشَدُّfiercest اِزدِلافاًin approach بَينَbetween دِرعَينِtwo coats of mail مُقبِلاًcharging
وَأَحسَنُand fairest وَجهاًof face بَينَbetween بُردَينِtwo cloaks مُحرِماin pilgrim consecration
Fiercest in his approach, charging between two coats of mail,
Worthy – if discourse is prolonged and his
and fairest of face, in pilgrim consecration between two cloaks.
Endurance is not won – to make the sword a ladder
جَديرٌworthy إِذاwhen ماever الخَطبُtrouble طالَtowered فَلَمand not تُنَلwas reached
ذُؤابَتُهُits crest أَنto يَجعَلَmake السَيفَthe sword سُلَّماa ladder
He is fit, when trouble towers and none can reach
Generous, when we visit him, he does not limit himself
its crest, to make the sword a ladder.
To inborn or acquired generosity
كَريمٌgenerous إِذاwhen زُرناهُwe visited him لَمnot يَقتَصِرhe limited بِناin treating us
عَلىto الكَرَمِgenerosity المَولودِinborn أَوbut also يَتَكَرَّماhe practices generosity
Generous: when we visit him, he does not confine us
He took upon himself the bearing of disasters, but rarely
to inborn generosity, but strives for still more.
Were the breasts of glory borne except by undertaking difficulties
تَجَشَّمَhe undertook arduously حَملَcarrying الفادِحاتِcrushing burdens وَقَلَّماand seldom
أُقيمَتwere raised صُدورُthe breasts of المَجدِglory إِلّاexcept تَجَشُّماthrough arduous effort
He undertook to carry crushing burdens, and seldom
I was the brother of devastation – we were not for some weakness –
are glory's breasts raised except through arduous effort.
So after annihilation, how often have you made me wealthy
وَكُنتُand I was أَخاa brother of الإِعدامِdestitution لَسناwe were not لِعِلَّةٍof different mothers
فَكَمso how many بِكَthrough you بَعدَafter العُدمِpoverty أَغنَيتُI enriched مُعدِماa pauper
I was poverty's brother—we were no half-brothers;
Since I am obligated to you and favorably endowed
how many a pauper, through you, I enriched after my own poverty!
I used to be in need of your green kindnesses, a granter of favor
وَإِذand whereas أَناI مَمنونٌfavored عَلَيَّupon me وَمُنعَمٌand blessed
فَأَصبَحتُso I became مِنfrom خَضراءِthe green abundance of نُعماكَyour bounty مُنعِماa benefactor
And I, once the recipient of favors and blessings,
Whoever serves the people hoping for their attainment
have become, through your verdant bounty, a benefactor.
I did not serve you except to be served
وَمَنand whoever خَدَمَserved الأَقوامَpeople يَرجوhoping for نَوالَهُمtheir gifts
فَإِنّيbut I لَمnot أَخدِمكَserved you إِلّاexcept لِأُخدَماso that I might be served
While others serve people hoping for their gifts,
I served you only so that I myself might be served.
