الَّتيthe one that رُزِقَتwas given sustenance وَأُخرىand another تُحرَمُis deprived
الَّتي رُزِقَت وَأُخرى تُحرَمُ
One land receives scant rain, another is drenched; among them
Some lands lie barren while others grow rich,
one is granted sustenance, while another is denied.
Some are blessed while others deprived.
فَإِذاso if تَأَمَّلتَyou contemplate البِلادَthe lands رَأَيتَهاyou see them

تُثري كَما تُثري الرِجالُ وَتُعدِمُ
If you contemplate the lands, you will see them
Survey the regions - you will see them
grow rich, as men grow rich, and become destitute.
Rise and fall like men, decay and thrive.

Fortune passes among the regions in turn, each at its time:
Fortune circles them, favoring each in turn;
one valley is empty of it, another brimming.

As a bright star ruling the world's scheme.
is the world's star, become profane and sacred.
Since Malik bore rule the blessed isle

That Jazira, since Malik broke camp,
Has shut its door against the clouds above.
has been left with the gate of rain barred against it.
Its villages are cloaked now in dust, and seem

Dust has covered its villages, though once they appeared
Like stars in his darkness, extinguished of love.
under his shelter as though they were stars.

To Hell, when its bliss left as if Hell came.
Hell has opened toward it since he departed.

I once saw it as a budding-breasted bride;
Bending to raise them, as was meet, sublime.
today it has become a child-bereaved widow.
Noble, he knew; to honor him was right.

When Rabi'a's lands had life-giving rain,
Base with them, he increased his esteem.
and the great road passed through Nisibis.
Enough, O sons of Amr ibn Ghanam!

You are the target of tongues, as I deem.
and the forest when that lion deserted it.
The glory of Rabi'a from ancient days

Indeed, among those soaring domes
When Jusham's hand was its shield and defense.
is a king through whom the age grows pleasant and noble.
They raid to conquer; conquest is their name.

Unassuming among his people, yet held in honor;
When disaster strikes or ruin looms near.
humble among the tribe, yet greatly revered.
Who then is pure, free of vice, now he has gone

And your abode forsaken, no more held dear?

Why do I see your soil so lifeless?

Why are your houses all in decay?
targets for spearheads, while the lances shatter.
What kin are these that merit no tenderness?

Glory is long-necked, and the lands are spacious;
What womb is this that pity does not sway?
and might is proud-chested, and the host is immense.
Envy of their own has ulcered kinship,

An ancient wound no medicine can heal.

Thus Quraysh, whose minds once joined as one,

Their dreams united, purposes fused real,
tab son of Sa'd—your arrow never loses the draw.
Until Muhammad came, the Prophet, from their ranks

Rabi'a was made a hand from the moment she was made;
Bearing the Revelation midst their band.
Jusham son of Bakr is her palm and wrist.
Then their accord corroded and minds locked.

Taghlib raids and conquers, true to its name;
All turned stubbornly against his command.
and Ghanm ranges through the lands and takes spoils.
Had they the scruple they feign, then never

Would they have stayed back from his advance.
if calamity looms large, or a financial burden is passed around.

Sweet once his ways were, but you abandoned them

For what was bitter salt beneath the skin.
Why do I see your mountains crumbling?
Until when you were ill, he prepared your cure.

What is this kinship that wins no favor?
Chastising cures: a wise man uses discipline.
What is this blood-tie that is shown no mercy?
I fear you sheathe the sword once drawn for blood.

Kin's envy of kin is an ulcer
Blood once spilt cries for vengeance ever stern.
whose stubborn bleedings defy cure, an age-old wound.
You tried to destroy his power, but it held fast;

That was Quraysh: their judgments never
Your sword glanced off, its notched edge firm.
went astray, nor were their minds divided,
Scorn cannot shake him. Think of days gone by
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen بُعِثَwas sent النَبِيُّthe prophet مُحَمَّدٌMuhammad

And past favors! See how blessings turn!
among them, their hatred began to blaze.
Feel remorse, if only remorse could mend

Their reason fled, though there was no people
The anguish in your breast that you have earned!
they did not surpass in wisdom and resolve,
If only one might come to him from us,
لَمّاwhen أَقامَsettled الوَحيُrevelation بَينَamong ظُهورِهِمtheir midst

وَرَأَوا رَسولَ اللَهِ أَحمَدَ مِنهُمُ
once revelation settled in their very midst
Or he would deign to take our blood-price fine!
and they saw God's messenger Ahmad was one of them.
Then those pleiades would not have bent their necks,

It is sound judgment—if sound judgment exists—
Those two stars, twins, would still serenely shine.
not to hold back the one through whom you advance.
I have known since you allied against him

If you turn away from Malik, or fail to recognize
Naught remained for you but grief to reap.
his bounty, the close bond of kinship knows it.
I studied well the configuration of his stars:

It is that bond, aggrieved by you, were it to complain;
The brilliant heavenly reader cannot misread.
wronged, were it to plead its grievance.

His character was honey-sweet to you;
I have known what troubles would descend.
but you left it salt and bitter colocynth;
O Malik! All of Nizar knows full well

of your illness: the spear-straightener makes straight.
When I saw you unharmed, joy stretched my hand.

At the sight, sorrow's vast shadow bent.
must be stern at times, and at times show mercy.
I smelled the scent of flowering Raḥba, the perfume

I praised you, for praise oils that noble bond.

لَمّا رَأَيتُ سَماءَهُ تَتَغَيَّمُ
I kept discerning its downpour from a raincloud,
when I saw its sky grow overcast.

O Malik, all of Nizar has learned:
no speckled serpent among the Araqim has been your equal.

and that black dye flaked off my cheeks.

and there the boundless sea quenched my thirst.

You undertake mighty deeds; yet whoever possesses
your two houses in Jusham need not toil.

away from them, when you are the guardian of noble deeds?

I offered praise, since praise was a snare,
a trap with which the generous benefactor is caught.

And I kept faith: there is commerce in faithfulness;
and I gave thanks: gratitude is a nourishing crop.
