O wife of poor Muqran, whose
O wife of the poor Miqran, who is no more
death weighed heavily on those who came calling.
She became too great for visitors, and her virtues passed away

The graves have a gazelle to themselves; I remember her—
The graves have been emptied of a gazelle I knew
her private meetings, so they say, were delightful.
Though it is said her privacy was blissful

She left the poor man burdened with several children,
She left behind a number of orphans for the poor man
like chicks whose mothers had been taken by death.
Like chicks whose mothers died

Had he secured his door or his house,
If only he had secured his home or house
her sons and daughters in his household would have been fewer.
His sons and daughters around him would be few

Their fields are submerged by their plants

He feigns sleep if her brothers visit her;
Drowsy when visited by his brothers
he is wide awake if her sisters visit her.
Awake when visited by her sisters

His wife—her commands held sway over him,
Her affairs carried out on him their matters
until we thought he was her wife.
That we almost thought that he was her subordinate
