أعُتبَةُO Utbah أَجبَنُmost cowardly الثَقلَينِof humans and jinn عُتباO Utb (Utbah)
بِجَهلِكَthrough your ignorance صِرتَyou have become لِلمَكروهِfor harm نَصباa target
O Utbah, most cowardly of humans and jinn—O Utb!
Through your ignorance you have become a target for harm.
رُميتَyou have been assailed بِمَنby one who لَوَif اِنَّthat الجِنَّthe jinn تُرمىwere assailed
بِهِby him لَتَنَهَّبَتهاwould surely plunder them الإِنسُhumankind نَهباa thorough plundering
You have been assailed by one who, were the jinn assailed
by him, humankind would plunder them utterly.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you إِنif تُساجِلنيvie with me تَجِدنيwill find me
لِرَأسِكَfor your head جَندَلاًstones وَلِفيكَand for your mouth تُرباdust
For if you vie with me, you will find me
stones for your head and dust for your mouth.
تَجِدyou will find صِلّاًa deadly serpent تَخالُyou would think بِكُلِّin every عُضوٍlimb
لَهُhe has مِنfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of الحَرَكاتِthe movements قَلباa heart
You will find a deadly serpent: you would think that in every limb
he has a heart, so fierce are his movements;
أَخاa brother of الفَلَواتِthe deserts قَدindeed أَحياhas given life وَأَردىand slain
رِكاباًriding-camels فيin صَحاصِحِهاtheir barren expanses وَرَكباand riders
a brother of the deserts, who has given life to and slain
riding-camels in their barren expanses, and riders.
فَكادَso he almost بِأَنto يُرىbe seen لِلشَرقِfor the East شَرقاًan east
وَكادَand he almost بِأَنto يَرىsee لِلغَربِfor the West غَرباa west
So he was almost seen as an east beyond the East,
and almost saw a west beyond the West.
وَأَنتَand you تُديرُturn قُطبَthe pivot of رَحاًa millstone عَلِيّاًhigh up
وَلَمand have not تَرَseen لِلرَحاon the millstone العَلياءِthe upper قُطباa pivot
And you turn a millstone's pivot aloft,
yet you have never seen a pivot on the upper millstone.
تَرىyou see ظَفَراًvictory بِكُلِّin every صِراعِwrestling bout with قِرنٍa rival
إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) كُنتَyou are أَسفَلَlower مِنهُthan him جَنباin respect of your side
You see victory in every wrestling bout with a rival,
whenever your side lies beneath his.
ثَكِلتُmay I be bereaved of قَصائِديmy poems إِنif مَرَّpasses يَومٌa day
وَلَمّاand have not yet أَقضِI exact فيهِin it مِنكَfrom you نَحباsatisfaction
May I be bereaved of my poems if a day goes by
without my exacting satisfaction from you that day.
وَكُنتُand I would be إِذَنthen كَأَنتَlike you فَإِنَّfor indeed مِثليone like me
إِذاif ماever (emphatic) كانَhe were مِثلُكَlike you كانَhe would be كَلباa dog
And I would then be like you; for one like me,
if he were like you, would be a dog.
