أَعُتَيبَO Utayb ياO اِبنَson of الفِعلَةِthe whore اللَخناءِfoul-smelling
أَأَمِنتَhave you felt safe? مِنfrom بَذَخيmy arrogance وَمِنand from غُلَوائيmy impetuosity
O Utayb, O son of the foul-smelling whore,
O you fault-finder, O son of a scurrilous mother,
Have you felt safe from my arrogance and my impetuosity?
Did you feel safe from my extravagance and my transgressions?
فَبِحُرمَةِso, by the sanctity of الغُرمولِthe penis فيin اِستِكَyour anus إِنَّهُindeed, it is
قَسَمٌan oath لَهُfor it حَقٌّa rightful claim عَلىupon البُغاءِthe prostitutes
So, by the sanctity of the cock in your ass—indeed, it is
By the sanctity of the pup in your lap, he
An oath that whores are bound to honor—
Has a right over adultery.
دَعواكَyour claim فيamong كَلبٍKalb أَعَمُّmore general فَضيحَةًa disgrace
وَأَخَصُّand more particular أَمor دَعواكَyour claim فيamong الشُعَراءِthe poets
Is your claim to belong to Kalb a more general disgrace,
Your invocation against a dog more disgraced
And a more particular one—or your claim to belong among poets?
Than your invocation against the poets.
عَجَباًa wonder لِصَيّادِat a hunter of الهِجاءِsatire بِعِرضِهِwith his honor
وَحِرُand the cunt of اِمِّهِhis mother أَبَداًforever عَلىin a state of الإِعراءِexposure
How strange—a hunter of satire, using his honor as bait,
Strange is the satirist who exposes his honor
While his mother's cunt is forever laid bare!
While his mother's shame remains veiled forever.
ماnot شِعرُهُhis poetry كُفأًa match لِشِعريfor my poetry فَليَمُتso let him die
غَيظاًof rage وَلاnor الخُلُقِيُّal-Khuluqi مِنamong أَكفائيmy equals
His poetry is no match for mine, so let him die
Let his poetry die if it equals mine,
Of rage; nor is al-Khuluqi among my equals.
And let him die of rage - he is not my equal!
أَنّىhow يَفوتُhe escapes مَخالِبيmy claws فيin بَلدَةٍa land
أَرضيmy earth بِهاin it مَبسوطَةٌspread out وَسَمائيand my sky
How can he escape my claws in a land
How can my claws miss in a country
Where my earth and my sky are spread wide?
Where my hands are extended and my skies vast?
وَكُهولُand the mature men of كَهلانَKahlan وَحَيّاand the two clans of حِميَرٍHimyar
كَالسَيلِlike a torrent قُدّاميbefore me مَعاًtogether وَوَرائيand behind me
And the mature men of Kahlan and the two clans of Himyar
Like a torrent before and behind me are the senile and the feeble,
Are like a torrent, together before me and behind me.
And the donkeys of ignoble men.
فَأُلاكَso those أَعماميmy paternal uncles الَّذينَwho تَعَمَّمواdonned turbans
بِالمَكرُماتِwith noble deeds وَهَذِهِand these آبائيmy forefathers
Those, then, are my paternal uncles, who donned turbans
Destruction take my paternal uncles
Of noble deeds; and these are my forefathers.
Who were ennobled by favors - they were my forefathers!
