سالِبَO robber عَينيmy eye لَذَّةَthe pleasure of الغُمضِclosing the eyes in sleep
وَمُبكِياًand making weep بَعضيpart of me عَلىover بَعضِanother part
O robber of my eye's delight in sleep,
My eyes find pleasure in closing,
Who makes one part of me weep over another,
And some of me weeps for the rest,
وَقاتِليand my slayer ظُلماًunjustly بِإِعراضِهِby his turning away
وَلَحظِهِand his glance بِالنَظَرِwith the gaze المُغضيdowncast
And slays me unjustly by his turning away
While your harsh indifference slays me,
And his glance, with its downcast gaze:
And your glance with averted eyes wounds me.
إِيّاكَyou, emphatically يَستَعطِفُimplores for compassion ذوone with فاقَةٍneed
جُرتَyou acted unjustly عَلَيهِtoward him فيin الَّذيwhat تَقضيyou decree
It is you whom one in need implores for compassion,
You are begged for mercy by the needy
You have wronged him in what you decree—
Whom the verdict you pronounced ruined,
مَنone who يَحسُدُenvies الأَرضَthe earth لِإِشفاقِهِout of his tender concern
مَوطِئَthe spot trodden by نَعلَيكَyour two sandals مِنَof الأَرضthe earth
One who, out of tender concern, envies the earth—
He who envies the ground you tread
The patch of earth where your two sandals tread.
For care and sorrow over you.
