O Rāmah, you would be the haunt of every gazelle,
Arammah, you were the companion of every poem
if you still enjoyed the companionship of old.
If only you enjoyed the old intimacy

O abode of misery, youthful passion made you lovely
Misery made you beautiful with longing
to me, and you became gardens of bliss.
So you became gardens of bliss to me

If indeed you have become an arena for sand-driving winds,
If you have become a battlefield for distractions
you have surely become an arena for sorrows.
You have indeed become a battlefield of worries

And of what saddened absence is that I
complained, but did not complain to a merciful soul.
Complained but did not complain to a compassionate one

And nights I spend awake as if I were
were snakebitten, or keeping vigil over one who was.
Safe and sound or stayed up over Safeem

I am wary of its stars, roaring
grazing freely, never returning to the herdsman.
Arrogantly, not grazing for the herdsman

So I swear if the darkness were asked about me
it would surely tell you of profound longing.
It would inform you of great passion

The daughters of travel under the sons of determination

The foolish spearman made the heights quake
and nothing makes them bleed but wounds.
And none make the heights quake but cowards

You would not differentiate between the distant and the intimate
