أَنوحَO Nūḥ بنَson of عَمروٍʿAmr إِنَّindeed ماwhat حُمَّwas decreed واقِعٌbound to happen
وَلِلأَجنُبِand for the flanks المُستَعلَياتِlofty مَصارِعُplaces of downfall
O Nūḥ, son of ʿAmr, what is decreed will surely come to pass.
An-Nuh, son of 'Amr, lo! what happened shall surely come to pass
And lofty flanks have their places of downfall.
And the foreigner shall taste the calamities of war.
أَلَمdid ... not? يُختَرَمbe carried off by death عَمرٌوʿAmr وَعَمرٌوand ʿAmr فَوَدَّعاso they both bade farewell
وَلاقىand met الحُوَيّانِthe two Ḥuwayys المَناياdeaths وَماتِعُand Mātiʿ
Did not ʿAmr and ʿAmr perish, and so bid farewell?
Did not 'Amr die, and 'Amr depart to bid farewell?
And the two Ḥuwayys met their deaths, as did Mātiʿ.
And did not Al-Huwayyan meet death, and perish?
فَصَبراًso, be patient فَفيfor in الصَبرِpatience الجَلالَةُdignity وَالتُقىand piety
وَلاand no إِثمَsin إِنif خُبِّرتُI am told أَنَّكَthat you جازِعُdistraught
So be patient, for in patience lie dignity and piety.
So patience, patience! In patience is glory and piety,
And there is no sin if I am told that you are distraught.
And no sin if thou art told: thou art fearful.
فَقَدfor ... may يَأجُرُrewards اللَهُGod الفَتىthe young man وَهوَwhile he كارِهٌunwilling
وَماand ... not الأَجرُthe reward إِلّاexcept أَجرُهُhis reward وَهوَwhile he طائِعُwillingly obedient
For God may reward a young man even when he is unwilling.
For maybe God will reward the youth though he be averse,
Yet true reward is the reward he receives when willingly obedient.
And reward is only His reward, whether thou art obedient or not.
