O ʿAmr, tell the rising moon:

The tear has grown too wide for the mender.

O temptation to the beholder, you have now become, through

this deed of yours, a temptation to the listener.

Are you anything but a young gazelle straying from its herd,

that has settled in a hungry lion’s lair?

What happened in the bedchamber concerning you

is now in the congregational mosque.

Ah, how long I ponder you as one bearing

a letter with its seal broken!
