جُعِلتُmay I be made فِداكَyour ransom عَبدَ‘Abd (servant) اللَهِAllah (God) عِنديwith me
بِعَقبِin the wake of الهَجرِestrangement مِنهُfrom him وَالبِعادِand separation
May I be your ransom! ‘Abd Allah is with me,
I sacrifice myself for you, O Abdullah, in my mind
after his estrangement and separation.
After being distant and separated from you.
لَهُwith him لُمَةٌa company مِنَof الكُتّابِthe scribes بيضٌfair-faced

قَضَواthey fulfilled حَقَّthe due الزِيارَةِthe visit وَالوِدادِand friendship
With him is a company of fair-faced scribes,
You have a group of eloquent writers
who have fulfilled the duties of visiting and friendship.
Who have fulfilled the right of visitation and affection.
وَأَحسِبُand I reckon يَومَهُمtheir day إِنif لَمnot تَجُدهُمyou shower them with bounty
مُصادِفَencountering دَعوَةٍa prayer مِنهُمfrom them جَمادِbe barren! (a curse)
And I reckon their day, unless you shower them with bounty,
And I reckon their day, if you do not find them,
will meet their prayer: “Be barren!”
Coincides with an invocation from them out of commitment.
فَكَمfor many a نَوءٍrainstorm مِنَof الصَهباءِtawny wine سارٍtraveling by night
وَآخَرَand another مِنكَfrom you بِالمَعروفِwith bounty غادِcoming at dawn
For many a rainstorm of tawny wine comes by night,
So how many clear camels have journeyed,
and another comes from you at dawn, bearing bounty.
And others from you with kindness have departed.
فَهَذاso this one يَستَهِلُّpours down عَلىupon غَليليmy burning thirst
وَهَذاand this one يَستَهِلُّpours down عَلىupon تِلاديmy inherited wealth
This one pours upon my burning thirst,
This one takes the first draughts of my water skin,
and that one pours upon my inherited wealth.
And that one takes the remaining sips of my water bag,
وَيَسقيand waters ذاthis one مَذانِبَthe channels كُلِّevery عِرقٍvein
وَيُترِعُand fills to the brim ذاthis one قَرارَةَthe basin كُلِّevery وادِvalley
This one waters the channels of every vein,
Quenching the thirst of every valley and plain,
and that one fills every valley’s basin to the brim.
And watering every settled and nomad place.
دَعَوتُهُمُI invited them عَلَيكَat your expense وَكُنتَand you were مِمَّنamong those whom

I invited them at your expense, and you were among those
I invoked them for you, and you were among those
whom we choose to tackle well-tied knots.
Whom we appoint regarding noble deeds.
