May he be watered at will, daily, and on alternate days—
She poured it gently, openly, and secretly
Abu Bishr, by the clouds’ downpours.
O Abu Bishr, clouds of sorrow!

سُرِرتُ بِهِ لِزَمزَمَ وَالمَقامِ
I clothed myself in longing for him, yet I
I wore it as a youth, though I took delight
Rejoiced for Zamzam and the Maqam on his account,
In it for Zamzam and the Sacred Mosque,

The morning a sturdy, unconsecrated she-camel set out carrying him,
The next morning, lawful livelihood poured forth
Strutting beneath a nobleman consecrated for pilgrimage.
Beneath a sinful spout,

The arts of letters lay disheveled at his departure,
Good manners threw off their rags in parting,
And after him the pools of speech ran dry.
And after him, the perfidy of words dried up.

نَأى غَرَضاً لِإِخوانِ السَلامِ
A trusted friend went away; so I was left, when
A brother in whom I confided went far away,
He went away, a target for companions of mere greetings—
So I remained when the loving ones went their own way.

Those with high resolve, fists that crush,
Frozen, and chivalrous virtues asleep.
Unyielding, and traits that slumber.

The most forgiving of them stays resentful toward you
Their blades stay drawn against you out of spite
For a dream, if he sees it in his sleep.
For a dream, if they see it while asleep.

And among the worst waters, when their bounty is sought,
And of the evils of water when it turns stagnant
Are those grown stagnant through long standing.
Is the length of its stillness.
