الهَوىlove ظالِمٌunjust وَأَنتَand you ظَلومُextremely unjust
كَيفَhow يَقوىcan withstand عَلَيكُماagainst you both المَثلومُthe wounded one
Love is unjust, and you are utterly unjust.
Love is unjust, and you are cruel,
How can the wounded one withstand you both?
How can the miserable endure you both?
لِلهَوىfor love جُرأَةٌaudacity وَمِنكَand from you صُدودٌrejection
لَيسَthere is not ليfor me مِنكُماamong you both مُحِبٌّone who loves رَحيمُmerciful
Love has audacity, and from you comes rejection.
Love is audacious, you are aloof,
Neither of you is a merciful lover to me.
I have no kind, merciful lover in you two.
قَدindeed بَرانيwore me thin الهَوىlove وَدَلَّهُand bewildered عَقليmy mind
حَلَّdescended بيupon me مِنكُماfrom you both البَلاءُthe affliction العَظيمُgreat
Love has worn me thin and bewildered my mind.
Love has exposed me, though my reason concealed me,
From you both, great affliction has befallen me.
From you both a great ordeal has befallen me.
إِنَّماonly يَعرِفُknows السُهادَsleeplessness وَطولَand the length of اللَيthe night (first part)
لِcompletion of “night” مَنone who حَبلُthe cord وَصلِهِof his union مَصرومُsevered
Sleeplessness and the length of the night are known only
Only he who bears the sadness and the long night
to one whose cord of union is severed.
Knows one whose rope of union is severed.
