إِنَّindeed حُزنيmy grief عَلَيكَbecause of you لَيسَis not عَلَيكاfor you
بَلrather عَلىfor مُهجَةٍlifeblood تَسيلُflows لَدَيكاbefore you
Indeed, my grief because of you is not for you,
My sadness for you is not for you,
but for lifeblood flowing before you.
But for a heart that melts before you.
أَنتَyou تُزهىglory بِصورَةٍin a form غَدَتِcame in the morning الأَبthe eyes (first part)
صارُthe eyes (remaining part) مِنbecause of حُسنِهاits beauty وَراحَتand came in the evening عَلَيكاto you
You glory in a form; eyes come in the morning,
You are adorned with a form that became a father,
drawn by its beauty, and come to you in the evening.
Its beauty rested upon you.
لَعَنَmay curse اللَهُGod مُقلَةًan eye جُعِلَwas entrusted الأَمthe choice (first part)
رُthe choice (remaining part) إِلَيهاto it فَفارَقَتand then it forsook مُقلَتَيكاyour two eyes
May God curse an eye that had the choice entrusted
May God curse the one whose separation was decreed,
to it, and then forsook your two eyes.
And she left your companionship.
بِأَبيmay my father be ransom for لَفظُكَyour speech المَليحُlovely الَّذيwhich قَدhas
تَرَكَleft السَمعَhearing وَهوَand it was طَوعُobedient to يَدَيكاyour two hands
May my father be ransom for your lovely speech, which has
By my father your eloquent words, which have
left hearing obedient to your hands.
Left the ears always at your hands.
كَيفَhow لاnot يَستَبِدُّlays sole claim بِالحُسنِto beauty لَفظٌan utterance
كُلَّماwhenever شِئتَyou wished جالَmoved فيupon شَفَتَيكاyour two lips
How could an utterance not claim beauty all to itself,
How can an utterance not take the lead in beauty,
when it moves upon your lips whenever you wish?
Whenever you wish, it glides on your lips.
إِنَّindeed قَلبيmy heart عَلَيكَtoward you فيin كُلِّevery وَصلٍunion
وَصُدودٍand estrangement أَرَقُّmore tender مِنthan خَدَّيكاyour two cheeks
Indeed, my heart, toward you, in every union
Indeed my heart is upon you in every intimate meeting
and estrangement, is more tender than your cheeks.
And aloofness, more gentle than your cheek.
