لَأَشكُرَنَّكَI shall surely thank you إِنif لَمnot أوتَI am overtaken مِنby أَجَليmy appointed death
لَأَشكُرَنَّكَ إِن لَم أوتَ مِن أَجَلي
شُكراًthanks يُوافيكَwill reach you عَنّيon my behalf آخِرَat the end of الأَبَدِeternity
شُكراً يُوافيكَ عَنّي آخِرَ الأَبَدِ
I shall surely thank you, if my appointed death does not overtake me,
I will thank You though I am not given
With thanks that will reach you from me at eternity’s end.
In return for my thanks what lasts through all days;
وَإِنand though تَوَرَّدتُI came to draw water مِنfrom بَحرِthe sea of البُحورِthe seas نَدىًbounty
وَإِن تَوَرَّدتُ مِن بَحرِ البُحورِ نَدىً
وَلَمand did not أَنَلI obtain مِنهُfrom it إِلّاexcept غُرفَةًa scoopful بِيَديwith my hand
وَلَم أَنَل مِنهُ إِلّا غُرفَةً بِيَدي
And though I sought bounty from the sea of seas,
And though my hands may from the endless main
And obtained from it only a scoopful with my hand.
Scoop but a handful from the watery ways.
