I saw glory's house flourishing through you,

when it gathered its courage and its footing grew firm.

And many a dark calamity, deemed a night—

its daylight shone forth to us from your two palms.

So may its drought not touch your suppliant neighbor,

nor its shame touch your unimpaired honor.

So never give delay power over generosity's pledge,

for it is a wretched brother and neighbor to scant favors.

For even the great among worthy favors,

when subjected to delay, become small.

And what good comes to one who died thirsty yesterday,

if today's sky pours rain for a long time?

And kindness deferred is merely like a friendship

you learned to do without when its meeting-place grew distant.

And a man's best promises are those with the shortest wait,

just as the finest nights are the shortest.
