أَطفَأتُI extinguished نارَthe fire هَواكَlove for you مِنfrom قَلبيmy heart
وَحَلَلتُنيand I untied myself مِنfrom عُروَةِthe loop الحُبِّlove
I have quenched the fire of loving you in my heart,
I extinguished the fire of your love from my heart
And untied myself from love's loop.
And freed myself from the bond of passion
أَبرَأتُI healed قَرحَةَa sore لَوعَةٍburning anguish نَبَتَتsprang up
بَينَwithin الشِغافِthe heart's membrane كَقَرحَةِlike a sore الجَنبِthe side
I have healed a sore of anguish that sprang up
I healed the wound of anguish that sprouted
Within the heart's membrane, like a sore in the side.
Between the ribs like the wound of pleurisy
ماnot الذَنبُthe fault ياO كَنزَhoard الذُنوبِthe sins مَعاًall together
لَكَyours فيin الهَوىlove لَكِنَّهُbut it is ذَنبيmy fault
The fault is not, O hoard of all sins,
It is not your fault, O treasure of faults together
Yours in love; rather, it is mine.
For the passion, but it is my fault
لِمَwhy لَمdid not أَقُلI say حَسبيenough for me فَأَذهَلَso I might forget عَنabout
مَنone who لَمdid not يَقُلsay مِنof هَجرِهِhis estrangement حَسبيenough for me
Why did I not say, 'Enough for me,' and so forget
Why did I not say “enough for me,” so he would stop
One who never said of his estrangement, 'Enough for me'?
The one who did not say “enough for me” from his estrangement
فَاِسلَمso be safe وَلاand may you not تَسلَمbe safe فَلاso there is no عَجَبٌwonder
لَمdid not تَنجُescape لُؤلُؤَةٌa pearl مِنَfrom الثَقبِpiercing
So be safe—and may you not be safe; no wonder:
So surrender or do not surrender, it is no wonder
No pearl has escaped being pierced.
A pearl does not escape being pierced
