I endured apart from you with unconquered patience,

And with an eye's tears poured over both cheeks.

You made me an abode for love, a homeland

For sorrow, O abode of beauty and fragrance.

Even if I denied to you what I suffered on your account, still

The witnesses to my agonies and torment have proved true,

Through sigh after sigh that has so often testified

That it was torn from the breast of one in distress.

But you assailed my body and made off with it—

O you who have seen the gazelle attacking the wolf!
