خَبِّروني مُذ بِنتُ عَنكُم وَبِنتُم
How are you in my absence—may you never taste separation?
How far am I, while you have not tasted separation?
Tell me, since I parted from you and you from me:
Tell me, since I turned away from you and you from me,

نَكَباتُ الدَهرِ الخَؤونِ فَخُنتُم
Are you as I knew you, or have you been changed
Am I as I was wont, or have changes altered you?
by the calamities of treacherous time, and so grown faithless?
The turns of Time and sad Mishaps have made you forget.

O my soul’s desires, surely my heart—even if I am carried away
O soul's delight, though the pain of absence with you lies,
by separation—is with you wherever you are.
My heart is still with you, wherever you may be.
