تَحَمَّلَdeparted مَنthe one whose حَياتيmy life فيin يَدَيهِhis two hands
فَياso, oh أَسَفيmy sorrow وَياand oh شَوقيmy longing إِلَيهِfor him
He in whose hands my life lies has departed.
He who holds my life in his hands
So, oh, my sorrow, and oh, my longing for him!
Oh, my regret and longing for him
تَعالىexalted be اللَهُGod ياoh طوبىblessedness لِعَينٍfor an eye
تُمَتِّعُdelights طَرفَهاits gaze فيin وَجنَتَيهِhis two cheeks
Exalted be God! How blessed is an eye
God, bless the eyes
that feasts its gaze upon his cheeks!
That feast upon his gardens
أَظُنُّI think البَينَseparation كانَwas يُريدُwishing فَجعيto bereave me
بِهِof him إِذsince صارَbegan يَحسُدُنيto envy me عَلَيهِfor him
I think separation wished to bereave me
I think separation meant my agony
of him, since it began to envy me for him.
When it envied me for him
سَأَبكيI shall weep ماas long as أَطاعَobeyed الدَمعُtears عَينيmy eye
مَحاسِنَهُhis charms وَفَترَةَand the languor مُقلَتَيهِof his two eyes
I shall weep, as long as tears obey my eye,
I will cry as long as my eyes obey
for his charms and the languor of his eyes.
For his beauty and the languor of his eyes
