    Have you not seen how I left myself to its own course,

    caring nothing for the world or its vicissitudes?

    وَلَو أَمَّنَتني ما قَبِلتُ أَمانَها

    Calamities have frightened me with all their turns;

    yet had they promised safety, I would not have trusted their promise.

    How can I make my bed upon the fire of nights,

    when the gray upon my temples is its smoke?

    I was stricken by a fair young woman; after her I shall remain

    bound to sorrow, weeping long over the days that were hers.

    فَلَمّا مَضى الإِلفُ اِستَرَدَّت عِنانَها

    The reins of pleasure once were held within my hand;

    but when my beloved passed, pleasure reclaimed its rein.

    I gave the statue-like beauties my estrangement—not even their fairest

    do I desire, nor does my heart yearn for their lovely ones.

    They say, “Would a young man weep for one sheltered maiden,

    when, whenever he wished, he could take ten in her place?”

    Can a man replace one of the five fingers of his hand,

    even if he fashioned those fingers from purest silver?
