لَوif كُنتَyou were عِنديwith me أَمسِyesterday وَهوَand he مُعانِقيembracing me
وَمَدامِعيand my tears تَجريflow عَلىover خَدَّيهِhis two cheeks
Had you been with me yesterday, while he embraced me,
If you were with me yesterday, embracing me,
And my tears were flowing over his cheeks,
As my tears streamed down my cheeks,
وَقَدِand already اِرتَوَتhad drunk their fill مِنfrom عَبرَتيmy tear وَجناتُهُhis cheeks
وَتَنَزَّهَتand wandered at leisure شَفَتايَmy two lips فيin شَفَتَيهِhis two lips
And his cheeks had drunk their fill of my tears,
And your cheeks were drenched with my weeping,
And my lips had wandered over his lips,
And my lips mingled with your lips,
لَرَأَيتَyou would have seen بَكّاءًa great weeper يَهونُis lowly عَلىbefore الهَوىlove
وَتَهونُand is easy تَخلِيَةُletting flow الدُموعِthe tears عَلَيهِfor him
You would have seen a weeper humbled before love,
You would have seen a weeping that makes longing seem easy,
And for whom letting tears flow came easily;
And shedding tears on him seem simple,
وَرَأَيتَand you would have seen أَحسَنَmore beautiful مِنthan بُكائيmy weeping قَولَهُhis words
هَذاthis الفَتىyoung man مُتَعَنِّتٌis tormenting عَينَيهِhis two eyes
And you would have found his words lovelier than my weeping:
And you would have heard, more beautiful than my weeping, his saying:
"This young man is tormenting his eyes."
"This lad is stubborn in his eyes."
