God's peace, as numerous as the grains of sand in Khabt,

upon Ibn al-Haytham, the king of purest worth.

I remembered you with a remembrance that drew my ribs

toward you, as though recalling youthful love.

May your dwelling never lack, on any day,

the clouds' gentle gifts from the rain-bringing stars.

May they drench with rain your rainlike bounty,

and a dwelling whose precincts are never shunned.

For there generosity's tethers are firmly fastened,

and there glory's domed tents are pitched.

And virtues in which musk seems mingled

with pure wine and sweet drops of water.

How many an expectation turned to dust you revived

through them, and how many a ruined hope you rebuilt!

Muhammad's right hand is a vast sea,

with towering waves and a maddened surge.

It pours forth generosity while the rainclouds withhold,

and cuts while the sharp sword fails to cut.

May you be ransomed, Abu al-Husayn, from calamities

and from the darkness of their wrathful happenings,

by an envier whose two hands have failed him,

while your hand is for bounty and for battle.

He counts what he gains, giving nothing,

while you give what you gain without reckoning.

He sets out seeking reward without giving,

yet all your bounty is given without seeking reward.

I recalled a favor of yours that clothed me

in luxuriant wealth and ample blessings.

It grows new whenever worn, and endures

when put to use, but wears out in concealment.

Whenever brought forth, it grows more radiant,

and its two cheeks grow pale beneath the veil.

To me it is no middle-aged spinster,

nor, from you, is it a virgin with budding breasts.

May the time you granted us never pass away; we lived

in its freshness and its wondrous splendor.

As though Indian ambergris were within it,

and musk-pods, their fragrant granules scattered.

Its nights were nights of union, made complete

by days like the days of youth.

I speak of some of what you bestowed on me,

and what you granted me before I asked.

And if I were able, there would stand in my place,

to thank you, everyone who walks upon the earth.

Then Madhhij would thank you wherever it might be:

its Banu Dayyan, and Banu al-Dibab.

And I would come to you amid Quda'ah, gathered

around its two pillars, Amir and Banu Janab.

And I would call on Hanzalah and Amr for help,

and set none equal to Sa'd and al-Rabab.

And I would seek aid from Qays's lofty summits:

Banu Badr and the proud chiefs of Banu Kilab.

And all Rabi'ah would rally for me,

with days like the days of al-Kulab.

Thus I would heal my soul with heartfelt gratitude,

for neglecting thanks lies heavier on the neck.

For you I stirred up from beneath my collarbones

rhymes that draw milk without a binding strap,

    earrings in the ears, enduring

as inscriptions endure in solid, hard rock.
