أَباO father of عَلِيٍّAli لِصَرفِfor the turns of الدَهرِtime وَالغِيَرand changes
وَلِلحَوادِثِand for calamities وَالأَيّامِand days وَالعِبَرِand lessons
O Abu Ali, for the turns of time and change,
and for calamities, days, and lessons,
أَذكَرتَنيyou reminded me أَمرَthe affair of داوُدٍDawud وَكُنتُand I was فَتىًa youth
مُصَرَّفَtossed about القَلبِthe heart فيamong الأَهواءِpassions وَالفِكَرِand thoughts
you reminded me of Dawud’s affair, when I was a youth,
my heart tossed about among passions and thoughts.
إِنif أَنتَyou لَمnot تَترُكِyou abandon السَيرَthe journey الحَثيثَswift إِلىtoward
جَآذِرِwild-ox calves الرومِthe Byzantines أَعنَقناwe shall hasten إِلىtoward الخَزَرِthe Khazars
If you do not abandon your swift journey toward
the wild-ox calves of Byzantium, we shall hasten to the Khazars.
أَعِندَكَis there beside you? الشَمسُthe sun قَدalready راقَتpleased مَحاسِنُهاher charms
وَأَنتَwhile you مُشتَغِلُpreoccupied الأَحشاءِthe inmost heart بِالقَمَرِwith the moon
Is the sun beside you, her charms so lovely,
while your inmost heart is absorbed in the moon?
إِنَّindeed النَفورَthe elusive one لَهُfor him عِنديwith me مَقَرُّa dwelling of هَوىًlove
يَحُلُّhe occupies مِنّيwithin me مَحَلَّthe place of السَمعِhearing وَالبَصَرِand sight
Indeed, the elusive one has a home in my love;
he holds within me the place of hearing and sight.
وَرُبَّand many a أَمنَعَmore impregnable مِنهُthan he جانِباًin flank وَحِمىًand in sanctuary
أَمسىhe reached evening وَتِكَّتُهُand his trouser-cord مِنّيfrom me عَلىin خَطَرِdanger
And many a man, more impregnable than he in flank and sanctuary,
has reached evening with his trouser-cord in danger from me.
جَرَّدتُI deployed فيهِagainst him جُنودَthe armies of العَزمِresolve فَاِنكَشَفَتthen lifted
عَنهُfrom him غَيابَتُهاtheir darkness عَنto reveal نَيكَةٍa fuck هَدَرِunavenged
I deployed against him the armies of resolve; then lifted
from him was their darkness, revealing a fuck gone unavenged.
سُبحانَglory to مَنHim whom سَبَّحَتهُglorified Him كُلُّevery جارِحَةٍlimb
ماwhat! فيكَin you مِنof طَمَحانِrestless straining الأَيرِthe cock وَالنَظَرِand the gaze
Glory to Him whom every limb glorifies!
What restless straining of cock and gaze there is in you!
أَنتَyou المُقيمُthe stay-at-home فَماso not تَغدوgo out at dawn رَواحِلُهُhis mounts
وَأَيرُهُand his cock أَبَداًforever مِنهُaway from him عَلىon سَفَرِa journey
You are the stay-at-home: your mounts never set out,
yet your cock is forever on a journey away from you.
