Leave me be, you whose eye-corners stream with tears,

and spare me the rush of your outpoured tears,

    فَبُعدُ الغايَ مِن حَظِّ العِتاقِ

    and your frightening me with separation grown wide and long;

for distant goals are the lot of thoroughbreds.

And you, bring those near—for a concern

has seized me, chin in hand and elbow propped—

young she-camels no guardian shields from my resolve's edge,

or from my sword on the morning of resolve.

Whenever you ask them to travel, they fill

our bucket of trotting up to its crossbars.

Their lean return matters little to me,

if they come back with well-fattened hopes.

A greeting that makes the heart tremble

to al-Hasan ibn Wahb and Iraq,

to the land dear to me, in its lowlands

and highlands, and the youth sweet to the taste.

We incline toward his ways, like soft terrain,

with few rocky stretches or stony, sandy patches.

And does a dire calamity, falling

upon those virtues, have any share?

Nights when we drowsed in the ease of life,

    as though Time lay fettered by them;

and days gentle to us and to him,

we reveled in their tender fringes.

We yearn despite our closeness and nearness,

and a cupbearer serves us a cup of longing,

as though, to us, our last meeting were long past,

    though meeting followed upon meeting.

I shall give the riders remembrance of him to drink, pure

and blended, from words that endure—

a drink whose greater part is the drinkers' portion,

and whose remainder comforts the companions.

And rhymes are forever sent between us by courier,

swift to escape, yet destined to be caught.

When they are bound, they trot; yet they are not,

when set loose, capable of running.

Upon their flanks and upon their humps

are fragrant cargoes of praise and longing,

    redoubled in yearning; plainly visible

upon their pages is the trace of parting.
